Rough Cut - Miss Georgiou

There are many reasons into why we had created a Rough Cut for our music video. One of the main reasons was so that we were able to get audience feedback in order to give us an idea on how our music video promotes our artist, and whether it is realistic and effective. Audience feedback is key to help us with the further the further developing of our music video. By getting the audiences feedback it will help with making our music video even more effective and also keep us conventional to our chosen music genre. It will also allow us to see what the audience thought was good and bad about our music video and this could give us some constructive feedback therefore making our music video even better. By getting the audiences feedback we are able to see what else could be used to make our music video more effective to our chosen genre and also possibly even more realistic and conventional too.

A rough cut is essential for us to carry out as it makes us show the audience what we have recently put together and to get feedback in order to make the rough cut into our final product. This enables us to get constructive feedback and to make our final product more effective and conventional to our chosen music genre which was indie. It also gives us an opportunity to see whether we need to refilm any elements due to things such as shaky filming or too many people within the background. This then again creates a better screening for everybody and the audience. We are then after feedback from the audience, able to then improve the rest of our final product to make it better and more effective to the indie genre.

We then received feedback from our peers within a class format. We showed a screening of our production of the rough cut to our peers within the classroom. This screening we uploaded our rough cut to our YouTube channel and then presented it to the class to get some feedback from the audience. This was like a focus group which whilst watching our rough cut they answered and filled out a questionnaire about the way in which our rough cut was presented. They answered questions and filled in boxes about what they though was good about our rough cut and elements that they thought could be improved. This allowed us to see what the audience thought was good about our screening and what elements they though we could improved which afterwards we could then improve and make our screening of our music video more appealing to the audience. We had some constructive feedback about how our music video could be improved. One was the way in which they said we could improve on was the use of our cinematography and our footage of the camera angles. Some of them were supposedly shaky and made the rough cut look very amateur and not very professional. This was something we could improve on by refilming certain footage by using equipment such as the tripod in order to get a more steady piece of footage, and trying not to move the camera and the tripod whilst filming as well. By putting the rough cut onto YouTube as well we were able to get family and friends and other people on YouTube to comment on what they thought was good on our rough cut and what they liked and disliked on it. This let see what a wider audience thought of our rough cut and would benefit us within the music industry as it lets us cater for a wider global audience through the use of the internet YouTube and get a wider audiences feedback from different countries and not just from one certain country. This then benefits the music industry as they are able to then get a better idea of what other people think too.

This feedback will benefit our production and the music industry as without feedback we are not able to see what other people like the audience think of the rough cut and without the audiences feedback we wouldn't be able to make our production better. It enables us to create a more conventional music video and to follow the elemetns that would help to create a better relationship between the artist and the audience and to help make a better final product. Another reason why feedback is important is that it lets us see where certain footage or elements could be improved and this would then create more of a better appearance for the artist and to show more of her personality traits through the music video. This would then therefore create and benefit the music industry as she would be able to appeal to more of an audience as they expect and want a certain thing, if they got feedback to do with the artist they could then appeal to her niche audience and let them have want they want (what the audience want). They also will benefit the music industry due to them promoting it themselves too, they will be able to get her more of a fan base and then therefore the let more people have a an opinion on the screening and give better feedback, giving a wider range of feedback instead of a minute piece.

There are many positive bits of feedback that we had from our peers and also via Youtube. One of the positive feedbacks was that te relationship between the artist and the partner was very realistic and relatable. The footage was very natural and then therefore let people believe that it was a real relationship between the artist and the boy. This was shown through the use of mise-en-scene body language and eye contact with eachother, it gave off a positive vibe and looked like a true and real relationship. It was realistic in the fact that it showed good strong emotion towards each other and natural cinematography such as POV (Point Of View) camera angle so that we could capture the natrability of the couple so that the audience could feel more of a relatable feel to the music video and make in more of a home movie vibe to make it again more relatable for the audience and this then therefore would create a better relationship between the audience and the artist.
Another positive feedback we had was the range of cinematography camera angles used was good and a vast range of them. This was good as it showed off the relationship and the performance of the artist with the camera really well. This would of benefitted the music industry as it shows how they can show many different sides of the artist through the use of camera angles and therefore then be able to show more of her and the relationship she has with her partner. This shows relatability and shows a vast range of different camera angles which again show the different personality traits of the artist and could possibly show off her performance and life too.
We also had a positive feedback of the use of performance, this was used as there were many close ups of the artist and this was so that the artist could connect more with her audience through the close ups as she could give them much better eye contact and body language and making the song about them. Although there wasn't enough performance this is something we could change so that we see her perfrom even better. By using close ups with the performance it lets the audience see the artists face and connect with her as we made sure the artist performed to the camera and therefore not away. This would create a better relationship between the audience as they may feel that the artist is singing to them and nobody else, and this is what the feedback said we had as a positive note towards our music video.

We had many different constructive comments made about our music video and one included people being within our shots of the video. We generally decided to make the music video as natural as possible because we wanted to convey the artist to be like her genre somebody who is natural and realistic and this is how we thought filming and getting natural reaction from people was good about the artist and showing the audience that they were a natural couple and a natural relationship. Although we could possibly overcome this naturalistic relationship and persona by cropping the added people out of the filming or instead refilm certain elements of the music video but have a different camera angle so that people aren't in the shots so that the audience focus more on the artist, her performance and her relationship with the partner instead of the other people that were in the background. We will still be able to create the realistic approach like we intended but get rid of certain people within the background.
Another constructive comment we had was that some of the filming was shaky. This could be due to some of the footage we did not use the tripod and this could of led to the footage being shaky. We also has trouble with the tripod too due to the windy and wet weather which led the tripod to move whilst recording and filming and also on the odd occasion fall over due to the windy wet weather. This is easily fixed for us as we can refilm the certain elements of possibly not use them or try to balance them out by editing them using the ProX element we used to edit our footage and if not check the weather before we go to film and just refilm small elements.
Another constructive comment we had was the use of repetitive shots and this was something we sported ourselves. As we did not have enough footage to cover the entire song we did repeat some of the shots that we had already used earlier on within our music video and this resulted into them being used just a bit too much. We have already filmed some more footage to put into our music video and this should hopefully connect better with the audience due to the wide range of footage we will now how. We plan to have more performance as well so that you can see the artists talent.

There are many different changes that we are going to introduce to our music video based on the comments we had received. We could possibly overcome this naturalistic relationship and persona by cropping the added people out of the filming or instead refilm certain elements of the music video but have a different camera angle so that people aren't in the shots so that the audience focus more on the artist, her performance and her relationship with the partner instead of the other people that were in the background. We will still be able to create the realistic approach like we intended but get rid of certain people within the background.

We also are going to make sure we use the tripod better as we could refilm the certain elements of possibly not use them or try to balance them out by editing them using the ProX element we used to edit our footage and if not check the weather before we go to film and just refilm small elements.
To therefore overcome the comment on repetitive footage we have already filmed some more footage to put into our music video and this should hopefully connect better with the audience due to the wide range of footage we will now how. We plan to have more performance as well so that you can see the artists talent.

Group Magazine Advert - Miss Miller -PUT PICS

We had created a group magazine advert as we wanted to show off our ideas of what we thought should be included to portray our artist in a more conventional way, following the ideas of your stereotypical genre whilst trying to create our own way of promoting the artist so that the audience will be able to connect with them in a better way. By a group magazine advert it gave us more ideas on what to put on the article, giving us ways of working well with what all individuals liked instead of it being just one persons ideas.
We have used certain elements within our poster from everybodys own individual magazine advert but mainly focussed on the elements from Leadnras article as it has made more appeal to our target audience as well as promoting our artist effectively.

One element used was the use of conventional colours. Within an indie genre the conventional colours that are stereotypically used are the use of natural/neutral colours, these could include light blues, yellows, pinks, greens and greys. By researching magazine adverts by other indie artists that were relevant to our chosen genre, we were able to see that the main colours used were blues, greens and greys. We decided to follow the stereotypical conventional colours in my magazine advert as we wanted the artist to be portrayed as an indie artist, not as somebody who isn't true to their genre. We had specifically used white and orange for the typography as this colour contrasted with the black/dark background. It made the writing stand out and we believe that this colour is conventional to an indie music genre and we ed this as it is a subtle colour. This colour can represent the innocence and the purity of the artists personality despite the photograph saying different. We wanted to show the audience that she is pure and subtle artist, and not somebody who would be so conscious of how she is portrayed. The colour shows her purity to the audience and makes them connect better with artist and have a better relationship with them as she is able to show that she is true to her personality and to herself and also her music.
Another colour we have used is the colour yellow. We have used yellow for the artist's name. This colouring was used as the artist's name is 'Lola Starr' - the yellow represents the stereotype of a star being yellow and the writing stands out so again makes her the centre of attention within the magazine advert.

There are many different conventions to the indie music genre our group magazine advert. We
have used a variety of different conventions within it, using different elements such as mis-en-scene clothing, body language, facial expressions, and eye contact; as well as elements with colour
cinematography etc. One of the conventions in which we have particularly followed is the use of mis-en-scene clothing. We have followed a very conventional/ stereotypical clothing scheme which when researched was used by many different indie artists. This included the conventional clothing of a baggy denim jacket, tight leather pants, doc martin boots (maroon) and a red bandana. By using this indie genre clothing, it has enabled me to promote the artist as very realistic to her audience as she is able to portray herself in normal day-day clothing. This would create a better relationship with the audience as she is able to show that she is relatable to her audience, and like them in a way, that they can believe she isn’t a superficial artist, that she is true to herself and her music, and this therefore makes her easily relatable to her target audience and connect with them better with a more realistic approach.
Another convention in which my magazine advert follows is the use of typography. We have both subverted and conformed the stereotypes of the indie music genre, as we have used writing that looks like the artist has handwritten it in some form, and this subverts the stereotypes of our music genre or any genre as you would typically see the artists writing on the front page of the magazine advert. This gives a more personal feel to the magazine advert as the artist is showing that she has personally given a message to her audience despite it only being the title of her hit single ‘Burn’ this being made to look like it is made from fire. It lets the audience connect more with the artist as they can see that the magazine advert is about the artist themselves, and it also makes the audience feel as if she has written the magazine advert herself. I have also included an image that shows a more rebellious indie artist, which would of subverted the indie music genre and makes her have a more powerful appearance instead of the stereotypical innocence they usually have about them.

The image we have used was taken from Leandra's and I's individual magazine article specifically as e artist in a natural habitat, outside, with a retro brick wall as the background, surrounded by some grass (for the natural setting), her body language strong with use of iconography such as the guitar to make the image more conventional to the indie music genre, whilst also promoting the artist as somebody who is conventional to her genre and to herself. The image shows her with a strong mis-en-scene body language and this shows her personality as being strong and determined. This is a good promotion of the artist as it shows off her personality as being strong and independant and this could possibly create a better relationship with her audience as it shows she wants everybody to be strong minded and independant, and nothing can bring them down so you shouldn't show your inequalities you should show that you are strong and independant. This then promotes her better to the audience as they see her personality shown through her body language and they will desire to be more like her independant strong self. The image also highlights the main features on her body due to the effect of  'contrast' used on Photshop. This let me use high key lighting to highlight the features on her face and the side that was facing the camera the most in order to show the outline of her body. This image shows off her sexuality but in a more subtle way so that she is promoted and portrayed as somebody who wants to get the wrong attention from her image. The image shows off her figure whilst following the conventions of the mis-en-scene elements clothing and the baggy top half, whilst the trousers are usually tight fitting. This creates a better relationship with the audience as she will be able to appeal to a wider audience including males as she shows off her sexuality as a female artist despite not looking provocative. This then therefore makes her look more independent and strong despite trying to look like somebody she isn't.
The layout and the design is fairly simple. The image is centred in the middle of the magazine advert so that the artist is made centre of attention. This promotes the artist in a positive light as why she is centre of attention it shows that she is the main focus and that the audience are able to focus on the artist and nothing really else on the magazine article. The writing and the typography is centred on the right hand side of the magazine article. This is so that it doesn't take away the main importance from the artist but has equal but less significant importance so that it catches the attention of the audience but doesn't too much so that they still focus on the artist. I have made sure I have included quotes from music magazines so that it makes the magazine advert look more professional and also to hopefully let the audience feel a better relationship with artist as they may feel a certain kind of loyalty to her as more and more magazines start to promote her; this then promotes her effectively as it makes her look like a well known artist and entices a wider global audience. Her name is at the top of the magazine article as it again makes her centre of attention; it shows that she is the main focus and that the audience are able to focus on the artist and nothing really else on the magazine article.

For the typography, I had specifically used orange fire writing for the typography as this colour contrasted with the black/dark background. It made the writing stand out for the title of her single - (Burn) - and then for the album title as well. I believe that this colour is conventional to an indie music genre and i used this as it is a subtle colour. This colour can represent the power of the artists personality despite the photograph saying different. We nted to show the audience that she is pure and subtle artist, and not somebody who would be so conscious of how she is portrayed. The colour shows her purity to the audience and makes them connect better with artist and have a better relationship with them as she is able to show that she is true to her personality and to herself and also her music. This was also in a handwriting font so that I could make it look like the artist had handwritten the magazine advert herself, to give a more personal feel towards it. It would create a better relationship with the audience as they will believe it is a sentiment from the artist herself and not from a magazine company or the record label, so therefore gives it a more personal feel.
Another colour I have used is the colour yellow. I have used yellow for the artist's name. This colouring was used as the artist's name is 'Lola Starr' - the yellow represents the stereotype of a star being yellow. The bold typography is so that the artist is centre of attention and that the audience know that this magazine article is all about her.
The language in our magazine article is very brief and simple so that my audience are able to understand something that is mean to be simple but promote the artist in a positive light. This could connote the artists personality as being simple as this is a very conventional trait/characteristic of an indie artist.
We feel that my magazine advert conforms to the indie music genres conventions as it uses different mis-en-scene elements such as body language and clothing, whilst using natural setting and colours and also iconography such as the guitar to show that the artist is an indie artist. We believe that my magazine advert will appeal to my target audience as it shows a strong independent women who has a musical talent due to the guitar iconography used. This will appeal to our audience as it may influence them to take up a musical instrument possibly the guitar just to be like the artist herself and to be more connected and have a personal feel and connection with the artist too. We believe by creating an individual magazine advert it will ensure that my group produces a successful magazine advert as we was able to use many different indie music genre conventions in order to portray my artist effectively and efficiently. We will be able to take ideas from all of our individual magazine adverts so that we can effectively create a advert that will promote our artist in a positive light.

Individual Digipak - Miss Miller

I have created an individual digipak so I was able to explore my artists genre in more depth and to also promote my artist in a  way that would conform her indie genre whilst promoting her in a positive light. By researching other indie artists digipaks I was able to see all of the different codes and conventions they use within their digipak in order to promote their artist effectively. It allows the target niche audience to be able to connect with the artist in a better way as they are able to see personal additions such as 'messages to the fans' from the artist and added images that they wouldn't typically see within a normal jewel CD case. This gives a more personal and connected relationship between the artist and the audience as the audience will feel that the album was made for them. The six slides allowed me to show the artists personality and her music through a series of different elements such as;
  • Colours
  • Codes and Conventions of the genre
  • Images
  • Layout/Design
  • Typography
  • Language
By considering all of theses micro-elements they have led me to my final digipak product.
I have used many different microelements to promote my artist effectively within this digipak. One being colour. When researching different indie genre digipaks I came across the colours being very natural and bright.
The colours were typically greens, yellows and whites. I wanted to both conform and subvert the genres colours scheme as I have used some yellows within the digipak which was to promote the artists name being 'Lola Starr'; this allowed me to use the stereotype of the artist being as bright as a star and you would stereotypically associate a star as being bright and yellow. I have used this for the typography on the front of the digipak as I believe this would create a efficient well known trade mark for the artist as the brightness of her name stands out and this would be easily eye catching and well known for the audience in order to recognise the artist.
One of the main colour schemes was natural colouring. The colouring is fairly dark and this shows the natural lighting of the scenery. This also subverts the stereotypes of the indie genre, although they use many bright natural colours like green and yellow, the dark scenery and background has made the artiest stand out and somebody who still conforms the genre but also subverts it to make her our image and create her own individuality. The high key lighting on the artist does intact highlight her features and the generic conventional colours on her mis en scene clothing, and this makes her stand out from the dark natural colours in the background. This could also make her recognisable from the other music artists as she isn't following the stereotypical colour scheme. This would create a better relationship between the artist and the audience as she has tried to show her own individuality by subverting her generic colours and showing off her own personal identity.

I have used many different conventions of the indie genre. One being mise-en-scene clothing and body language. On the front of the digipak i have used close up of the artist's face so that the audience can connect with her better as she is specifically looking at the camera and making eye contact with the audience. This is conventional to the music genre as she is able to show off her features in a subtle way giving off eye contact in order to connect better with her audience and making her eyes the main feature of the front cover. The use of the conventional clothing throughout for example the baggy denim jacket, red bandana and tight leather leggings with use of iconography such as the guitar  gives off a stereotypical indie music artist. This is because you would stereotypically see the artist as somebody who wants to show off their sexuality through the bottom half and being more covered up rather than too revealing. This is clothing you would generally see within indie artists as they want their clothing to look more realistic, and this is why i has used this convention to the genre as i wanted the audience to feel a more personal and realistic relationship with the artist than one that doesn't really exist.
Another convention i have used is the use of mise-en-scene iconography. I have used the iconography the guitar to show that the artist is somebody who is multitalented. This would promote the artist effectively as it shows she is a good musician, somebody who can play a range of interments to show off her musical talent. This is also conventional to an indie music genre, as they stereotypically use instruments such as guitars and pianos which emphasise their ability as music artists and shows that they can pal different instruments. This would help create a better relationship with the audience as they may possibly be inspired with the fact their artist plays interment, and by showing this is many of the images within her digipak it give them more of an inspiration to take up an instrument. This would make the audience feel more personally connected with the artist as they too may feel that they have a connection with her.
The main colour schemes was natural colouring. The colouring is fairly dark and is a stereotype of the genre as this shows the natural lighting of the scenery.

The images i have used within my digipak promote the artist efficiently and effectively, and as somebody who would conform to the genres stereotypes. One image on the front cover specifically i have used as it is a close up of the artist and shows the peace sign over her eyes. The use of the high key lighting on her face makes her big blue eyes stand out more and shows better eye contact with the camera/audience. The image is specifically used so the audience feel a connection with the artist and see more of her up close than they would usually. This image shows the conventions of the natural eye make up that indie artists stereotypically use. This also gives a better relationship between the artist and the audience as it shows the naturalness of the artist and also how she isn't superficial, and this makes the audience believe that she is somebody who is true to herself and also to reality, and this will be something again that the audience could possibly copy. It promotes the artist effectively as it again makes her look like someone who is relatable to her target audience and easier for them to connect to also.
Another image I included was the artist on the floor in the natural ground/earth and surrounded with her guitar. I used this image specifically as the back cover with the song titles as I wanted it to look as if the artist was completely obsessed with her music and the genre of her music. The specific use of mis-en-scene body language of her looking towards her guitar makes her look like she loves playing music, and this would connect with the audience and promote her effectively as it would make her look as someone who is completely besotted with musicnd wanted to show it to her fan. This I believe would make a better relationship with her audience as it would show that she is true to her music and also to her individuality as an artist.

The layout is just like your stereotypical layout for a digipak. It included six sections, that in which were to make the artist look more appealing to her audience and in order to give better information to the audience so they have a close and more personal insight to the artist that what they usually would in a jewel CD case. I had included a personal message from the artist to her audience so that it gave a more personal feel to the digipak. This would create a much better relationship between the artist and the audience as they believe that he has personally taken the time to think of her fans and this will make her seem like her genre stereotype of her being kind an thoughtful. I also made the layout very simple so that it is easier for the audience, this also is a stereotype for the genre as it wouldn't be conventional to the genre if it was too flashy and bright, I wanted to create a more mellow feel to the genre and the digipak.

The typography  colours were typically greens, yellows and whites. The language within my digipak is also very simple as this would make it easier for the audience to understand and also mak eit more real to the audience too. It gives the digipak a more relatable feel for the audience and therefore could possibly promote the artists personality as being simple aswell.

I did struggle with using Photoshop as I had trouble with the resizing of my image. When I tried to resize my image to make it smaller, it didn't respond with the computer so the system crashed, this happen many times and after getting some guidance by creating new labels I was fortunately able to resolve this issue and caught up efficiently. Another weakness using photo shop was the labels. I kept creating new labels without realising I could possibly duplicate them to make everything easier for me to do and also save me some time. I was able to do this by clicking the right button on the mouse over the layer and therefore duplicate the layer. I then as able to rename it and save myself some more time.
One of my strengths was using the lassio magnetic tool. This enabled me to fully use the entire image but crop out what I didn't want. I found this a rather handy tool to use as it let me enhance one image whilst a did the background separately. This helped create a successful advert as I was able to edit the main image of the artist separately make her mainly on high key lighting whilst the background remained in low key lighting. This was excellent as it made the artist look centre of attention as the main focus was there.
Another strength of mine was the use of the effects that I could put over the image. I used the artist filter and colour filters to give the image more effect. This worked well as it made the artist look centre of attention and the main focus was there. It created a successful advert as it was focussed on the artist and gave a more indie look due to the filter colours used which were, orange, greys and greens which are all conventional to an indie genre.

I believe that my digipak conforms the genres conventions genre generally as it uses elements such as mis-en-scene clothing, body language and eye contact/makeup; this allowed me to promote the indie genre and the artist effectively as it was more relatable and I made sure that the artist was the centre of attention.  I believe this will appeal to my target audience as it does follow the conventions of an indie genre mainly but alo subverts them too. This is due to elements such as the colouring being darker and more grungy rather than uplifting and bright. It will also appeal to the audience more as it has a personal message within it as it will make it more personal t the fans and also makes the artist the centre of attention whilst also promoting her as somebody who is very subtle and simple. It will also appeal to the audience as it will make them see the artist in her true element.
I believe that creating an individual digipak will help ensure that our group produces a successful final digipak as it show many different conventions of the indie genre and how to promote my artist effectively and my group would be able to take many different ideas from mine in order to create a effective group digipak.

You have provided a good analysis of your individual digipak, explaining all of the elements used on each of the slides and what you hope they create; as well as an analysis of Photoshop and tools used.

You need to:

1) Make sure you state specifically where different elements are used (front/back cover, cd etc.)

2) Reconsider you paragraph on photoshop
3) Include a pic of your completed digipak
