The first genre I looked at and the music video was Indie/Dance - Ellie Gouding 'Burn' - I chose to look at this particular music video as It has been one of my favourites. I then began to realise it isn't typically conventional to a indie music video as it has many dance aspects into it. This made me suddenly spring to mind many differnet ideas, whilst also thinking of a narrative/performace/concept whilst linking it to Goodwins theory in which the lyrics matching the visuals.
Idea of an abusive relationship - alcohol - brick lane .
There are many different microelements to her music such as the clothing she wears matches the genre of her music. It is very conventions with the large bagging jumpers the very short shorts etc. The lyrics make me a the audience feel connected to the artist andthis is what I want to portray throughout my music video as the audience are meant to feel a connection with the artist. Although she hasn't many coventions to dance, she does use editing with lighting. It shows flashing lighting which is a major convention to the dance genre which shows her diversity between the two.
Another music video I looked at to do with Ellie Goulding was How long will I love you. Again this is another unconventional music video to the genre of indie. Although more conventional compared to some of her other songs. This gave me an idea with the genre of love , linking the visuals again to the lyrics, or possibly subverting the conventions and again possibly deciding to do something along the lines of a troubled relationship but they cannot stop loving them. Or the partner could die and she is reminiscing on the past. Here again we see conventions of an indie song with the iconography such as the guitar and the performance.
This is conventional to a indie music video as there is only really narrative and performance throughout as they mainly want their lyrics to be heard, not the main focus to be on the video. This inspired me as I believed that the video could be really plain and simple to match the lyrics of the song, or e could subvert the convention and make the video jam packed and with the intention to go against the tempo matching the video. As she has many coventions to the indie genere we connected to her as an audience as we felt that she was being true to herself and following the genere and not trying to push too many boundaries like some artists do. This was inspirational for us as we were able to gather many differnt ideas that were able to think how this video would work as a whole.
The second artist I looked at was Avril Lavigne whom I took inspiration from as she is so diverse with her music videos in which some range from Pop/Rock to just Rock and her lyrics are so inspiring as they come from the heart and really feel like they mean something. I looked at her song complicated, as the lyrics really inspired me as it shows a complicated love - with heartbreak - and we can feel her anger through her lyrics and her actions within the video. It inspired me as she had used mainly the stereotypes of a pop/rock video with her mis-en-scene costume and make up. She was in a skaters outfit with grungy yet subtle makeup. Although it is subtle makeup it is still very conventional to that particular genre and that is why it has inspired me the most, not because of the lyrics but the way it follows conventions. Although this may not work in our favour, but by many artist =s following the coventions of their genre they have made great music videos and I think one of the key elements that we need is to follow the conventions especially mis-en-scene as this creates an image for the artist that can make the whole video come together. Complicated was the song we looked at for her as again it has better meanings and different outakes from it.
Finally the other artist I have been looking at was Ed Sheeran. Despite having a more soulful meaningful voice, he is still classed as an indie/pop genre. This is because his music has elements of both. Ed Sheerans music for example Sing is one of his most popular songs. This completely went against the conventions of any music genre that has. In this particular musiv video he uses puppets to have as himself and this has never been seen in a music video before. Although having editing with the use of flashing lights he still subverted stereotypes of his genre ranging from - puppets, hardly any performance from himself, no back up dancers etc. This made the video more popular as they saw him as something else. The audience connected more with his lyrics of his song as the video didn't explain the lyrics, so in order for the adueince to understand they had to piece together and relaise what significance the video had with the song. This is why it has inspired me as I believe that even going against the streotypes you can still create a great generic music video. As Ed Sheeran was very inspirational to our group we were able to take different conventions of his indie videos and take many of the coventional themes. For our music video we are looking at A team by Ed Sheeran as it has many different hidden meanings and i believe we will get a full audience from this song as it could repreasent and connect with the audience much better.
Another music video that inspired me was John Legend All Of Me. I looked at this specifically as I wanted to look at the editing styles it uses. Although it will not be conventional to our indie music genre it has many different editing styles that I believe will assist me when planning my music video. The type of editing styles that were used specifically included colour filters. This is evident where we see that the music video is in black and white. This colour filter gives a more dramatic effect and makes us as the audience conenct more with the narrative and the relationship bewteen the pair within the scenes.
The black and white filter also highlights the colours as the colours that are brighter are highlighted and made whiter whilst the darker more shadowed colours are made darker and the two colours contrast eachother giving a more romantic and connective feel for the audience.
Anotehr editing style they use is both quick and slow editing. This is essential with a music video as it conencts with the different narratives in place within this music video. The quick editing connotes how time flies by with the pair and their love for one another this creates an effect of unconditional lovefor the pair and makes the audience connect with them as you see how muich one another love eachother. The slow editing makes the audience see the conection between the two as the use of mis-en-scene body language with their eye contact shows how much they love eachother and they are destined to be togther. These editing styles would be good to use within our music video as they conenct with the love narrative very well.
