Planning Setting and Iconography - Miss.Georgiou

By planing what we are going to put into our music video, it enables us to plan ahead how and where we are going to film our music video. The locations and iconography elements are important within a music video as this could be a conventional theme or something that is conventional to the genre. They are also important as it can create an image for the artist and could relate to them in different ways, giving off different meanings to present the codes and conventions of our chosen genre. They are also important as they make a music video more relatable for the audience and lets the audience connect with the artist in more ways; this could be because the audience may like a certain setting and try to find our where it was filmed, so that they could be where their favourite artist was, and also the iconography could be something the audience want to buy, so will create a profit for the artist or for other companies if used within the music video.

One of the first locations of our music video will be Camden Lock. We have chosen this location as a part of our music video as it reflects the codes and conventions of an indie genre. This location, despite being busy and unconventional, it reflects the conventions of the style of the genre. The location is 'very indie' that meaning the area is very quirky. Camden conveys a message about our artist and portrays the artist as the location. This I mean by , that the location reflects the artist's personality of being very unique and different from your normal standard location. It challenges the conventions of the genre's stereotypical location as it isn't in a rural area, but the typical camden has graffiti and different, unusual art all over the walls and the area, and I think this would link in very well with out artist. This follows the style of our production in the sense that it is a very natural place to have filming be done as we want to convey the naturalness of the artist through the use of the setting. By having the natural meaning of the setting this shows that our style has to be natural to show off the innocent personality of the artist and her partner and how the naturalness shows the trueness of the artist as she is trying to potray herself and her style through the use of setting. This follows the style of my music video as it shows that i am following the stereotypes of the indie genre, this meaning the natural style i am trying to create is shown through the setting because i am not creating a new setting, i am using what the world had create and using the elements such as the rivers and the streets that are available to use at no extra cost. This style then links with our product of naturability as the whole entire genre of indie is also natural and therefore makes it more easy for the audience to be able to connect with if the style ad everything connects with the genre.

There are many things that will take place within the location including the action. We plan on filming a wide range of the song within this particular area as the indie artist matches the overall persona of the area in Camden. We are planning to let the artist 'busking' (perform in camden market) which shows the artist performing in a built up area. This is essential when we plan our music video as it makes the artist look relatable to her audience as this is a normal thing that people do to show off their talent as a performer and as a vocalist. This location, despite being built up, isn't one of the most wealthiest of areas, but this could possibly connect the artist with the audience as they could relate to her 'poor' lifestyle, and also they could connect to her by a musician wa
y, as the audience could of done 'busking' before in their life in order to earn some money in difficult times.
The other action that could possibly take place in this particular music video is when they take pictures together on a night out in Camden. This shows the nightlife of Camden lock and the relationship between the pair. This shows that the pair are outgoing and love to live their lives to the full. It is essential we use this location for this particular action piece, because it shows a pair together  in somewhere that can be portrayed as being poor and unique, as people that can enjoy their love together in any location they visit. It could connect the audience with the artist as it could be a location they have visited before and therefore want to go a see the video more so that they can feel connected with the artist as the artist was in the area they visited. This shows the style of the music video to be fun and true aswell as they are showing the personality of the artist through the use of the lifestyle we are trying to portray, the style here is to show the fun side of the artist and how she could possibly relate to the audience in ways which she enjoys herself and she is out to have fun. The style is to portray the artist in a more positive light than what they usually would in other music videos. This style o believe would create a better relationship with the audience as is shows the artist as somebody who enjoys herself and is relatble in the sense that she wants everybody including her fans to enjoy life just like she enjoys her music and her nightlife and her relationship with the partner. This also links in with the style of our music video as it shows that i am following the stereotypes of the indie genre, this meaning the natural style i am trying to create is shown through the setting because i am not creating a new setting, i am using what the world had create and using the elements such as the rivers and the streets that are available to use at no extra cost. This style then links with our product of naturability as the whole entire genre of indie is also natural and therefore makes it more easy for the audience to be able to connect with if the style ad everything connects with the genre.

This location in Camden can limit what we can do in our music video as where we are in a public area and the people in the background could be unpredictable and try to disturb our filming. This could result into a problem for us as we will then not be able to get enough filming done, and also limit us to our narrative as we will be following a plan that we created as a group and this then could result into problems between the group such as decision making etc. The people in the background could make our work unprofessional and try to make fun of our work, and this could drive us out of the location as we may feel the pressure of filming in such a public are could effect our entire music video.
Another limitation could be the weather. As we are in such a public area, whilst being outdoor for the majority of the video, the weather is very unpredictable and if the weather turns out to rain, we will be unable to film outside due to the bad conditions. We also have expensive filming equipment such as video camera, a tripod etc and this could get ruined or damaged in the result
of bad weather. This then limits us with the facilities we can then use as we will have no functioning equipment in order to film our music video. This then leads to us not having enough time to get our music video made in time and finalised quick enough to summit as we may not have enough footage to use throughout the entire music video and therefore the same different locations will be used instead of having a variety of different locations. The back up plans in result of bad weather is to film in someone with more cover, possibly under shelter but not inside as we are committed to film outside. To protect the equipment we could put bin liners over them to stop them getting wet, and put them underneath umbrellas to keep ourselves dry when filming and the equipment to stop any damage occurring.
This links in with our naturalistic style/approach to my music video as i am ususing real people reactions to what were filming. This shows that real people may react in different ways to the situations that we include within my music video and that by using their reactions within this music video it lets the audience see what other people in the area can see alo and how they can react to the scenarios also. This ahaoom shows my style of my music video as being conventional as it is showing the setting as being very natural and realistic for my audience.

There are many health and safety risks that we have to think about before filming in order to overcome them. One for example are the people in the public within Camden Lock. By filming in the public area the public may not appreciate being filmed and not knowing why. They may feel that they are being mocked and possibly abused by being filmed in the background of a music video. This could create problems for us as  they may not want us to film in the area as they feel under pressure or just for the simple reason they do not want to be filmed. In order to overcome this, we could possibly ask the people that may walk into frame or who maybe filmed if they would like to take part in our music video, and therefore getting people that are willingly happy to get filmed instead of filming without their permission.
Another health and safety risk is by filming in a public area, there maybe too many people to film within the area. If we film there could be a risk of possible injury to cast members/filming members due to a large crowd. To overcome this, we must find an area that may not be as busy to film to reduce the risk of any injury to anybody in our filming crew or to anybody in the public, whom are our main priority. Another way to overcome this is to possibly put some sort of barrier around the area in which we are filming, possibly some cones etc to corner off and warn people that the area may cause injury due to filming. This could also give us more opportunity to film in the area without being disrupted.

Another area in which we are filming in are in some of our back gardens in our homes. We are using this particularly in our music video to create a bonfire in order to burn certain things connected with the relationship of our pair through the narrative. This location is in a natural setting and this is relatable to the audience as it is in a natural homely setting and this can make them feel that they can relate to her if they also have a garden. We have also taken this idea to use the garden as something more relatable to the audience as the garden will make them feel the relationship between the artist and her partner is true and real to the audience.
This location will be used during the breaking up scenes where she is in the garden and is burning things of his and creating  a large bonfire. This will be relatable to the audience because they are then able to see that the artist is going through what maybe many girls have been through or are going through. This can give a message across to the audience that the artist is going through a traumatic break up and is letting her feelings put by making a bonfire and burning things that relate to the boy. This is essential as it makes the audience feel relatable to the artist and sympathise with them as she is in a troubled situation and she feels the need to rid of anything of him (her partner). This relates to the style of our product for example being a natrual setting , for it being within a home setting it makes the narrative more relatable for the audience in the fact that it shows the artist in her own natural environemtn, making the audience see and create a more personal connection with the artist herself. This location gives the audience a insight to the artists home and also her personal life therefore again creating a more natural style to the music video and also to the artist and for her audience too.

Close ups and establishing shots will be used to show the artists face and the location that she is in and the different things that are happening, her throwing in different things into the fire and the different types of facial expressions that she is pulling to express herself and the feelings that she is feeling underneath. The close ups are essential within the music video as it shows the emotions of the artist throughout her relationship and this lets the audience create the relationship with the artist as they make feel empathy towards her if the see her feelings more.
The limitations of this location is the fact that we intend on making a bonfire so we do not want to make the bonfire out of control and cause a problem with the neighbours and disrupt their view or there could be a problem where the bonfire could get out of control and set trees on fire.
The health and safety risks that may come about is the fact that the bonfire could get out of control and could hurt and burn themselves. To avoid this we intend on keeping a safe distance from the bonfire and also keep a bucket of water and possibly a fire extinguisher near by as safety precaution and to keep the fire at bay.
The weather could also be an issue as it may rain the day that we decide to make the bonfire, it could rain and therefore make it impossible to make a bonfire, unless we make a bonfire before it rains and then use the rain to make the music video more believable and realistic.  We could also protect the fire from any bad weather with better protection from the wind.

The iconography we intend on using within our music video are; a guitar, beanie hats, alcoholic drinks and cigarettes.
The first piece of iconography that we intend on using is a guitar, specifically an acoustic guitar which is mainly used in indie music videos because it shows off the artists talent that they have. My group and I chose this particular guitar because the tune and the sound that this particular guitar makes is soothing for the audience to listen too, also it is an easy instrument to carry around to the different settings that we want to film in. This is conventional to an indie genre because most indie artists are multi-talented and can play different music instruments. We also see in many indie music videos as they carry this gutar on a strap on the back. This is conventional an this Is what we want to use in our music video.
A bandana that we also chose to use within our music video. We chose this because many artists whether they are male of female have been seen to be wearing this in their indie music video, this is to show that they are relaxed and comfortable within their music video and not pretending to be someone that they are not but being themselves and who they are.
This is conventional within an indie music video because the use of beanie hats are used to be relaxed and to allow the artist to be who they want and to express themselves. This shows that the artist can connect with the audience not only with their music but their clothing as well.
The use of alcoholic drinks shows that the audience are having a good time maybe at a party or with someone special, or it could also show that they are trying to swallow their sadness and their feelings. This can be conventional to an indie genre as the narrative story behind most indie songs are relationship based and usually alcohol is used for the artist to drown their sorrows in the drink. Drinking alcohol can be seen as a way of being rebellious and using drink as a sort of escapism from the real world, this could apply to many different scenarios and issues arising that the characters may be going through and drinking is the only time that they could drown their sorrows and be themselves.
This is an image of a packet of cigarettes which we intend on using in our music video as cigarettes are seen to the public as something rebellious, and indie music usually has artists doing rebellious things either on their own or with someone.
This can be seen as conventional to an indie genre because it is  something rebellious which many people like to do. This can show the audience that the artist is rebellious by smoking with their partner. Smoking is seen as a stress reliever and could be used by teenagers and young adults to relieve stress. This is what we are trying to get across to the audience about the background life of the artist and what they are going through and what they are like. This can give an insight to the life of the artist and whether the audience are going through the exact same thing but despite doing this we are trying not to show that this is necessary.

The style within our music video is mainly narrative and performance based throughout so that we can get the lyrics to match the visuals and to help create a relationship for the audience and artist to have when in the music video. The style of the narrative will make the audience connect with the artist more as we are having a natural relationship in the narrative and also this is something that the audience could possibly relate to or want and the twist in the narrative is the abusive relationship they follow and again this could connect with the audience as they may feel sympathy towards the artist. The narrative aim is so that it can effect the audience in a way in which they could possibly connect the artist and the and the together and relate in a way they think is acceptable to the normal world, therefore making the music video relatable to the everyday moments. The performance style will be used through the use of cinematography camera angles such as long shots to show off the figure and the sexuality of the artist and the close ups to show off the natural beauty of the artist and show her talent through her singing. This will connect with the audience in a better way as due to the performance they will get to see her perform to them and they may think its only them but it also shows off her talent as a musical artist. By having a naturalistic style towards my music video it lets the audience create a more personal feel to the music video and therefore staying with the natrual and relatable style that we wanted to create within the video too.

Planning Cienmatography - Miss Georgiou

Cinematography is very important when planning and making a music video as each specific camera shot used can show many conventions of different music genres and help connect the artist with the audience whilst also showing performance and narrative within the music video. Cinematography can be used to capture the audiences attention and give a wide overview of the setting of the music video and can also show a better insight to the artist if the audience can see more. It is an extremely helpful element and aspect when making a music video as you can make the artist be portrayed in many different ways from many different angles.
There are man different angles that we may use within the making of our music video all to show different aspects of the narrative and performance within our video. We are using many of the elements of cinematography to show the artist within her element of music. Using conventional cinematography elements allows us to show what is specifically used in an indie music genre.
Some of the camera angles we are going to include are:

Close up
Close ups are conventional within an indie music genre because the close up show the emotion of the artist as they sing to the audience when they perform. The use direct eye contact with the camera through close ups and this allows the audience to connect with the artist more as the audience believe the artist is singing to them and this makes the audience feel more of a connection with the artist as they have one on one time with the artist. Close up's can also be used to attract the audience and to draw them into the lyrics more than what they would with any other camera angle. This is due to the fact the eye contact with the camera allows the audience to believe that the artist is singing to them and only them, which allows the audience to feel more connection and feelings with the artist. This camera shot will help represent my artist's feelings through mis-en-scene facial expressions and body language as the closer you can see his/her face the more likely you are able to see the emotions she feels when performing her song to the audience within the music video. The close ups will be used throughout our music video so that we can share the emotions the artist is going through, through her relationship in the music video, it allows the audience to connect more with the narrative in this perspective. This follows the performance style of our music video as it shows close ups of the artist performing to the caera and shows of elements such as her facial expressions and elements of mise-en-scene with iconography with the guitar and natural make up etc. This makes this connect with the audience more as they will be able to see up close what the artist generally looks like and see how she performs and connects with the caerma in order to make her audience feel more special like they are performing for the audience and just them and nobody else.

Two shot
A two shot will be used to show the artist with her partner looking at each other without them knowing, this can show the audience the background story of the artist and what she is going through. briefly from a happy relationship to an abusive relationship including alcohol etc. Show ling the two people together shows that there is a relationship going on and that they are a couple and this is conventional to an indie music video as this is conventionally used to show the relationship beyond the pair, and show them thinking about many different things when they look at each other. This is conventional because indie artists usually sing about relationships and shows also who they are singing about. This helps represent the artist in a positive light as it shows her taste in men and what she would like to find in a guy and the different things that they do together. This could create a relationship with the audience as it give an insight to the relationship of the artist on screen but also what she may think relationships could be like. You can also empathise with the artist as here it shows she is trying to show both opinions and both points of view of their on screen relationship rather than on specific side. This connects with the narrative style of our music video as it shows both the relationship of the artist and her partner and the love between them is shown through the two shot as you can see both their emotions through this camera angle and then that way we can show the audience how they connect as a pair and then that way they can feel that the relationship is true and then that way connect more with the relationship and the artist themselves. It will connect with the lyrics of the song aswell as they are able to show how their love is like a fire and they burn to be together and how the lyrics can have a hidden meaning of love, also in particular the lyric /we don't have to worry about nothing' shows they need nothing apart from eachother. This shows the style of our music video of being naturalistic and focussing more on the narrative side as they can see the main elements of the music video through this element and also see the natura style coming through the performance and also especially the narrative.

 Establishing shot
The establishing shot will show the audience the setting that the artist is in, and those who are around them. This allows us within our music video to show the entire setting which will be conventional to the indie music genre. This is conventional with an indie music
genre because is shows the area in which the artist is and those who are around them so the audience can connect with the surroundings and the artist. This camera shot will help me to represent my artist by showing the audience of what the artist is like and where she likes to be and hang out. The setting also allows us to show the different areas in which the artist visits and this can be relatable for the audience as they will be in relatable areas, giving the audience more connection with the artist as they are able to possibly visit the places the artist has in the music video or may have been there so the audience can therefore believe they are more connected with them therefore have more relatableness within the music video. This show the more narrative style of our music video as it shows the relatable side to the setting. This setting is somewhere where most people would have visited and this shows a relatability to her audience and makes the audience feel that they can connect with her more as they are able to see that she is somebody just like them and not somebody who is all about herself. It shows that she is apart of the real world.

Medium Shot
The medium shot is used to show the artist and the instrument that she is playing which can show her concentration over the guitar as if she is singing her fee
lings through the guitar/instrument. This shot is conventional because this shows the audience that the artist is musical and can play many different instruments which are again conventional to a indie music genre.  This will help represent the artist as somewhat talented and musical and this can connect with the audience as it will let them believe they can also make music and it could inspire them to take up an instrument as well. This will be specifically used to show the instrument off so that we have some conventional aspects within our music video. This also connects with Dyer's theory of a star as it show that all artist sow talent and our artist will show it through her talent of musical instruments like guitars instead of through performing and narrative. The shows the performance style of our music video and connects with the lyrics of the song as the chorus mentions 'burn' and this to me connotes fire and by performing throughout the chorus with a guitar makes me believe that she is showing how powerful the fire in their relationshuip is and how powerful she thinks her music is aswell. This would create a better relationship with the audience as it shows how much she loves her music and how much she loves her partner, this way the audieince feel more involved with the song. It also makes the audience connedct more with the lyrics as they can see what they mean with the connection of the music with the relationship. It also creates a more personal relationship with the artist as they get to see the inside of the artists home and therefore creates a more naturalitic style to the music video whic is what we want to try and portray throughout.

Zoom in
Zooming in can be shown the artist and to look up at the artist, this is conventional to an indie music genre because in certain types of lyrics you can focus on the artists face by zooming in on them. You won't be able to see the persons facial expression from a distance therefore the zooming in helps the audience showing the facial expression of the artist. This will help represent the artist as different to show the emotion on their face and help the audience attract and feel as though they connect with the artist. This way the audience will be able to connect with the artist more if they are able to see their facial expressions with certain lyrics to show emotion. This follows the style of our music video and it kind of creates a better relationship with the audience as the main focus will be on the artist this shows the audience that the main focus of the music video and shows how she is centre of attention. This connects with the lyrics in some ways as it makes her the cwentre of attention and it shows that her music is the main focus aswell as her.
The target audience can build a relationship with the artist through the camera shorts that I have selected as they are very conventional to our indie music genre, and therefore the facial expression that is involved within the camera shot can help the audience get more involved with the artist and help them get involved with their words and lyrics. The conventional lyrics enable to artist to then therefore connect more realistically with her audience and therefore promote her single in a relatable way.

Magazine Advert Analysis - Miss Miller

Advertising, can announce new and existing products or services they are trying to sell to the public.. Advertising is a strategy used to grab the attention of potential customers. Advertisements use language and communication techniques that appeal to consumers so that they end up buying new albums and products to do with the artist. By using strategic language or images in an ad, the company can influence consumers to buy their product. Strategic language and imagery in advertising helps point out the strengths of a product or service, which can influence consumers' purchasing decisions.
Consumers to perceive the brand in a certain way. Advertising is influential by nature, therefore, different elements within an ad, such as the text and images, can be positioned in order to add value to the brand.

There are many more ways in which a magazine advert is used and the purpose of them:
  • To promote an artist’s album
  • To reach a wider target audience (people that read magazine as well as listen to music
  • To act as a constant reminder of the upcoming album
  • To link in with other advertisements of the album to create more marketing
  • To get support from other companies that could push sales further
  • To link in with any articles within the magazine on the artist (benefits for both the magazine and artist)

The two adverts I have chosen to analyse are one by my artist who is Ellie Goulding to see whether we could get any inspiration from this to include into our own music video reinvention of hers and to see whether it could have any representation of her within the advert.
The other advert I am going to analyse is the advert for BenHoward, which is very different to Ellie Goulding's and as they both contrast with each other, despite being from the same genre, I am going to see how it portrays her as an artist and the purpose of why she has included some of the particular elements within this music magazine advert.

This magazine advert 'Lights' portrays Ellie as conventional to her music genre. Despite it having more of a pop genre feel towards this it shows the many indie qualities within.
The artist in this magazine article is made to look like a young girl who is in her teenage years who has made her fame. She is seen as a superstar and is wearing a black dress to come across as though she looks older than her actual age and is therefore seen as an older and important artist. This connects wither audience as despite being able to show and try to relate more to her audience she shows her individuality and the conventional feeling of

The use of the close up image of her shows the audience that she is the main focus of this music album, and that she wants people to see who she really is by seeing different features of her face. This shows the audience what the artist looks like and therefore allows the audience to notice any other work that she may also take part in.
The use of mise-en-scene body language can show her femininity and that she is very open within her songs and her feelings which can show the audience with what type of person she is. The stance is very strong and powerful which isn't so conventional to an indie genre but she is trying to portray herself to be somebody that is strong and keeps her head up high and makes the audience possibly feel a sense of pride when seeing this image and the stance she has taken.
The black dress that she is wearing shows the writing as being white, gold and also a black dress can be shown as something that a young person wears to something quite professional and possibly even perform in. This can show that she is a young professional person who is important to the music industry and possibly connect better with the audience as she is showing she can diverse and change her image whenever she wants

Typography:Her name looks like lights that you would see on a theatre which links in with the title of her music album which is "lights". The font is easy to read and looks sophistacated and therefore shows that she is a sophistacated young lady and shows that she is a star with her name lit up in lights.
There is block writing used underneath the main title to show the reviews of the album and what the audience thought of the music artist and the rating that it has been given by different members of the public.
The writing is large and therefore easy to read for the audience to automatically identify the artist as they can see by the large title and the style of the writing that is used and can be shown and identified by the audience.

The style of language used is very simple as it is meant to appeal to a large audience and therefore be able to attract different age ranges.

The design of the magazine artist shows the artist to look like she has gold glitter in her hair to give the impression that she has lights in her hair. This relates to her album name as it shares the same name which is 'Lights' therefore this is to keep the theme of the album and herself consistent with each other. This can relate to the target audience as indie music is all about expressing themselves and being different, therefore the lights in the hair and the adding glitter in the hair is to make the artist seem different. This can be unconventional to an indie music video because indie music artist usually wears baggy trousers and casual clothing but in this magazine advert she is wearing a sophisticated black dress.
Her name is used in the centre of the magazine article so she can promote herself and to show the audience who the artist is. This can also show that as her name is in the centre of the advert then she must be important as her name and her face are the main focuses of the music advert.

The colours used within this music advert are black and gold, they are almost opposite colours so you can se one against the other. The gold lighting can be shown as illuminating lights and bright which is the same colour as her hair. The black may be shown to be quite dull and not interesting but is contrasted with the brightness of the gold that is shown as the title and in her hair.

The black within the magazine advert can represent the blackness  or the deepness that she has, as the black is mainly shown from her neck down which may link with her feeling and the blackness that she is dealing with and the emotions that run deep like a deep abyss where her feelings are being held and kept.
The gold used on her face and her hair can represent the sun and the light that radiates from the sun lights the way and shows the way and illuminates the path which is what this artist also shows through her music that she illuminates the way for her audience and therefore creates an escape from the blackness. Her name can also be the light that illuminates the way as it is against the darkness and therefore can be shown as though her name is lit up in lights and showing the way.
This advert promotes the indie music genre by the use of the glitter in her hair can show that this is an indie music genre because indie music artists are those who have their own style of clothing, this can help the audience see that indie music is different and has its own style and therefore gain more audiences.
The advert promotes the artist because of the close up used of the artist to show the audience who she is and the genre that she is mainly related to.
This advert attracts the audience through the use of the contrast of colours, that are seen as sophisticated and different and therefore will attract mainly women who will want to listen to music that would link in with their feelings that women feel.

Representation of music artist:
This artist is represented as slightly different to other artists magazine adverts because this shows that the artist is different and outrageous because he is shown to be scuba diving. Scuba diving  is seen as an extreme hobby which many people cannot achieve, therefore this can show that the artist is being shown as extreme and different.

Colours:
The colours used are mainly cold colours which are blues, to represent the sea and the gradual gradient of the colours with the lighter colour blue at the top to represent the sun shining through from the surface and the darker colour below to show the depth of the album and the songs that will be involved. Therefore this shows that the artist is a deep person and shows the audience about what a type of person that they are like.
The white against the blue stands out which shows that the artist likes to stand out against the crowd and likes to be seen as different, especially when it stands out against against the blue.

Design/Layout:
The design and layout of the magazine article is quite simple as the artists name is at the top of the magazine article in a large font to show the audience who the main artist is and to show the audience who he is and the name of the album. The image in the middle which is meant to be the artist looking at the audience. The apparent image of Ben Howard in the centre is to promote him as an artist and that he is the main important artist within this album. There isn't a close up used of the artist but a full body shot to show him scuba diving, this may mean that he doesn't want the audience to see what he looks like and to be judged by his appearance, but would rather be judged on his music as it is more important than an image.

Choice of Images:
The use of the young man scuba diving could show what the artist is like by doing something that no one would like to do, can do, or want to do. The depth of the ocean can show or represent his music and how his music has a deep meaningful meaning behind it. There aren't many images used within this magazine article to show that there is more than what meets the eye, that not everything is shown straight to you but is shown in a different way.

Typography:
The font used within this magazine article is large and easy to read therefore the audience can identify who the artist is off the shelf in a CD store. The name of the artist is in a larger font so the audience can easily identify him. The smaller font used at the bottom of the magazine advert shows clearly when the  album will be released, this gives the audience all the vital information that the audience will need.

Style of language:
The style of language used within this advert is simple and easy to read and understand for audience of all ages. The use of the title of the album is called "Every Kingdom" which is appropriate to the cover of the album as there is a water kingdom below the surface of the earth where the fish are. This can therefore show that the artist is trying to reach out to all kingdoms, above water and below.

Connotations of the artist:
The meaning behind this magazine advert can be seen in many different ways, firstly the back image of the ocean can symbolise the music that Ben Howard's music is deep and mysterious because the ocean is also deep and mysterious that may also have something to with the music and the artist himself.
The man scuba diving can show that he is reckless and isn't afraid to do things that some people might to too scared to do, also go places that no man has ever been before, like the depth of the ocean, this can explain or show what type of person he is, daring and reckless.

This is helpful for myself when creating a magazine article for my artist as I can see and compare that from two different genres you can have different ways in showing the audience what the artist is like. The use of colour is very important because that could be used to show the audience what the artist is like as a person, whether they are of a warm character or of a cold character. The music can also be like the person, either cold or warm. There are many different inspirations I have come across in order to make my magazine adverts and one is the fact the artist must be the centre of attention. Although not seen in ben howards magazine advert I believe that the ellie golding advert would be more relevant for our artist as by having the use of the artist being in the middle of the advert we will be able to entice new audiences and let old audience recognise the artist too. It shows more relatability for the audiences as they will be able to connect with the artist more if they see closeups of her and nobody else. The colouring ahs to be natural and nothing to outgoing due to us wanting to keep to the natraul indie convention that they are as natural as they can be and not fake. This would then come across to the audiences that we are keep to the codes and conventions of an indie music genre.

Lyric Anaylsis - Miss.Georgiou Redo

We anaylsed the lyrics to our song in order to prepare a storyboard of what we wanted to use in our own music video. We had to show hidden meanings, ideas and many other different element so that we could plan our music video.

We firstly reviewed and looked closely at our lyrics so that we could figure out some meanings to the song. This song we have chosen 'Burn' doesn't have a narrative about a relationship and we thought specific lyrics such as 'Burn' and 'we don't have to worry nothing' linked well with a relationship that is abusive with alcohol and drugs, as they claim they have nothing to wordy about when they are in a positive spell of their relationship, and then obviously when things turn bad for them they have to turn to alcohol and drugs to help them pull through. The hidden meanings also show that the abusive relationships maybe hard to get out of but with confidence and trust you can pull through the abuse and forget everything and get out of the relationship.

We have annotated the lyrics by annotating each stanza creating different ideas and analysing the different micro-elements. We analysed the narrative particularly and the elements such as mis-en-scene, editing, cinematography and what we are going to do with these specific elements. We looked at different effects we could use for editing and different camera angles, mis-en-scene elements such as iconography, costume and make-up.
The mise-en-scene elements will include stereotypical elements such as clothing, makeup iconography. For example we have discussed when analysing the lyrics the clothing conventions of an idnie genre. For example when researching more into different indie rtists we saw that the stereotypical conventions were baggy clothing, tight trousers, big hoodies and boots to show that it is relatable clothing and that it is easily able to copy. This would therefore be able to create a better relationship between the artist and the audience as they will be able to copy the artist as it is relatable clothing and everyday clothing. This would make the audience think that the artist is a relatable character and somebody that doesn't care about what they look like, we want to portray the character to be somebody who the audience can relate too instead of somebody that they find hard to copy and even relate too. This then shows the indie conventions of the clothing and shows how we can replicate artists but also show different ways in which we could convey her individuality.

Another way in which we mise-en-scene is the makeup throughout the music video, one way is the natural makeup. When researching into different makeups the artists main element is the use of powerful eyes, this was that her eyes used eyeliner to make the eye contact the main focus with the artist and the audience so that she can connect with them in a different way. We then discussed that if we used this convention it would connect the artist and the audience better due to the fact they can connect with better eye contact, and then therefore show the natural makeup as the focus will be on the face of the artist and nothing else. Then the other elements we consisted of was the use of cinematography camera angles, especially the use of closeups. This is something we noticed was very prominent in all music videos and especially when the artist is performing. This shows off the artists talent and shows how this micrelement promotes the artist in a positive way as the audience may feel that with the use of close ups when the artist is performing they may feel that the artist is perforing just for them and nobody else. This would then make the audience feel more connected with the artist as they can see her perform too.

Another inspiration we took was from the setting of many different music videos and when looking int the indie conventional settings they were usually very remote and recluse in the fact it was mainly just the artist and her music. We have decided to kind of subvert the stereotypical setting as we want to show more of a relatable setting and somewhere in which the audience cold possibly connect to as they may have been there before. We have decided on going to film in Camden as it would of been a more indie setting due to the way people dress in baggy clothing and different clothing too, this would make the music video more relatable as the audience could possibly visit the place and even find it more relatable than somewhere they have never been before. This would create a better relationship between the artist and the audience as they will feel normality and relatability towards her due to the natural setting in which the music video is set.

The other micro element we have included when analysing the lyrics is that we wanted to incude the use of the mis-en-scene iconography the use of the guitar. This is an essential convention of an indie genre that needs to be included within our music video because it is a conventional musical instrument tht indie artists play. This is essential for us into making an audience connect with the artist as this is an instrument that the audience could possibly get inspired to play the instrument and then therefore feel more connected to the artist in a more musical way.

The annotations of the lyrics will assist us with planning micro-elements, style, target audience and conventions with our chosen song by Ellie Goulding as by going through each stanza it allowed us to annotate what exactly we wanted to do throughout the music video and how we would used them in order to create a good music video. This is helpful because when we do come to start filming our music video we are able to go step by step what we planned as a group instead of not being able to remember what we did or wanted to do. It will allow us to work better as a group as we have been able to think of the ideas together and not individually.

This relates to the music video as it lets me me focus on the style of music video. The style of my music video is mainly narrative and performance based. This is mainly because i wanted to keep the production simple for my audience and show that the hidden meanings were shown through the performance related sequence and also the narrative. This style would connect with the audience better as they would be able to see the artist performing to not only the camera, but to them also and this would help them to create a better relationship with the artist as they may think that the song is directed to them and nobody else. This then therefore makes the audience see the characteristics of the artist and see how she is represented in a better way to them and also her music too.

The micro elements we discovered from analysing the lyrics analysis and planned different mis-en-scene element techniques such as iconography. When performing i wanted to show the conventional iconography elements within an indie music video. By using the conventional iconography of the guitar instrument, it enabled us to decide what lyric i was going to use to perform to the camera with. This planning technique enabled me to decide exactly what lyrics my artist was going to perform and sing to so that i could film this accordingly and create an artist that was entertaining for the audience. This inspiration then led to being made into my music video and demonstrated my understanding of the conventions of iconography in the indie genre, and i wanted the artist too look more relatable and representable. Another micro element I'm going to use is cinematography close ups, this enables the micro element is include s that my artist will look realistic more to my audience and that they will create a better relationship with the artist as she will loo more ordinary but in a more extraordinary way as she will be us using relatable and realistic clothing such as checkered shirts, leather leggings, over sized denim jackets and boots, which again are all conventional elements to the indie music genre. This inspiration of realistic clothing inspired me to include it within my music video as it made the artist and the narrative look more relatable to the everyday motive of an ordinary person. This plan of clothing was then put into the music video so that the audience were able to feel a better connection with the artist.

The outline of my narrative is something that could easily relate to my target audience. This is because i wanted the narrative to relate to the lyrics of the song but also have a hidden meaning of an abusive relationship, the abuse of the relationship being they abuse the use of alcohol after their relationship has ended or through an argument. This narrative was based on the lyrics analysis as the chorus as 'Burn' conveys something burning, but i added the hidden message through images saying that they burn their hearts when they argue and break up and the only way they can heal it is through the use of alcohol. The narrative is relatable as the audience could relate to the narrative through their own situations in relationships and therefore making the artist more relatable also.
To conclude the research has assisted us in many different ways as it has shown us the stereotypical conventions of an indie genre and has helped us in ways such as mise-en-scene, cinemaogrphy and also editing and ways in which we can properly connect with the sudience and connect the audience with the artist too. The inspirations we have taken all promote the artist in a better light and therefore we will use within our final music video.

Research Into Chosen Music Artist - Miss Georgiou

There are many ways in why Ellie Goulding (who is our chosen music artist) interested us. Firstly, the genre in which she performs is a mixture of both pop and indie music. This was inspirational to us as it shows her diversity as an artist and how she can perform two different genres, whilst also combining them into one music video. Another reason was the way she uses mis-en-scene costume to show her personality and how she uses her genre to show her style. She uses conventional clothing such as tight shorts, tights, with a bagging coat/jacket and this is all used through her choices of subtle/natural colour scheme. She typically uses colours such as brown, blue light pink which is what you would expect from a indie artist and by using the colours and the clothing it portrays Ellie to be kind and gentle also. Her music shows creativity, diversity and it also has a personal feel towards it for the audience to connect more with it. It gave us inspiration as the lyrics helped us to think of many ideas to do with narrative and concept, and ideas that could possibly relate to a real life scenario, and this was all just from her lyrics. Her lyrics connected with us as a group and we were able to decide on her due to all of the aspects of her as an artist.

Ellie Goulding is also known from her true name 'Elena Jane Goulding ' is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actress from Lyonshall, Herefordshire, England. She was an insecure indie girl who used to wear baggy t-shirts and hoodies.
She first came into the light In 2010, when she became the second artist to both top the BBC's annual Sound of (an annual BBC poll of music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent ) poll and win the Critics' Choice Award at the Brit Awards in the same year. Goulding released her debut studio album, Lights, in 2010. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and has sold over 850,000 copies in the UK.
By the end of 2013, she has sold an estimated 4 million albums and 19 million singles worldwide. At the 2014 BRIT Awards she received the award for Best British Female. She plays a wide range of instruments including - guitar, mandolin,  keyboard, bass, drums,  percussion and clarinet. She has four main record labels - Neon Gold, Polydor, Cherrytree and Interscope.

How Long Will I Love You

This was one of the music videos that inspired us with Ellie Goulding. This was because she subverts the stereotypes of her pop/indie genre by toning down her image and showing just her voice and her instruments. She does follow the genre of indie and the conventions due to her subtle casual look.

There are many ways in which Dyer's Star theory is used within this music video. It firstly shows her the common values of music stardom, originality, creativity and talent. Richard Dyer says that a star is an image, and not a real person, they are constructed through the record label. Although this music video shows her stripped down to just her vocals, she has not always been able to control what she does in the music videos as the record labels have a certain image/criteria that they want her to follow, and in order to pursue her career in the music industry artists are made to follow their record label in order to succeed. We can tell that this music video follows this specific theory of Dyer's as from previous music videos we see her using mis-en-scene costume as something that shows her off, something that is quite provocative in all previous music videos and this is where the record label follows the codes and conventions of the pop/indie genre as they think that it relates more to their target audience rather than show her true style. Another way in which this music video follows Dyer's theory is through his theory of Paradox 2. This Paradox says that the star must be present and absent from the consumer. In this music video despite being present to the consumer, you see Goulding in her natural element, in the record studio making the song for the audience. The Record label are then able to show the audience that despite being absent from them, she is still working on bringing something new to the industry for them within her music but in the recording studio. Having this in her music video, lets her create a relationship with the audience as she is able to give the audience an insight of her profession and see what the audience aren't able to see typically.
Dyer says that the incoherence of the star image ensures that audiences continually strive to 'complete' or to 'make sense' of the stars image. This is usually achieved by continued performance which promises the completion of the image but it is always ultimately unsatisfying.  This is shown in this music video through the showing of her entire image with the use of long shot also showing her perform. This creates her star image as she is contastnly wearing modern clothing but her image always changes and this makes the audience want to copy her style of clothing but as she changes it frequently she isn't always in the same clothing, so therefore the audience constantly strive to be just like her and are not fully satisfied in the end.

Goowins theory is used throughout the entire music video. The first theory it follows is that the music video's demonstrate genre characteristics, this shows that she can follow the indie/pop genre characteristics, codes and conventions. For example, in this music video she shows performance which is a characteristic of both the pop and indie genre. We see her performing towards the camera whilst also performing with mis-en-scene iconography such as her guitar. This follows Goodwins theory as a performance in this particular genre is key to following the characteristics and also essential so that the audience are able to connect more with the artist, and see them in their own element. It creates a relationship with the audience as they are able to connect with the artists performance and feel like they are watching her in the flesh and this will let them feel more connected to her that way. Another way in which it follows Goodwin's theory of music video's demonstrate genre characteristics are through the use of mis-en-scene costume. She follows the generic conventions of a indie genre as she is wearing bagging jumpers, abnormal hats and tight bottom clothing throughout the entire music video. The cardigans/jumpers are oversized and this gives a relatable and realistic approach to the music video and this will connect and make a relationship with the audience as she is making her clothing relatable to the audience as it is your day-day clothing. The audience will relate to the artist more in this way as they will believe she is normal just like them despite having a career in the music industry, and shows the audience she isn't try to impress anybody with her look, she just wants to show them her music and not let the audience focus too much on her image.
Another way in which this music video follows his theory is the way in which there is a visual relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. This is shown through the cinematography camera angles, a variety of close-ups, long shots and mid-shots show a relationship between Ellie Goulding and a man who love each other and the connection they share as partners. This is essential within a music video as it gives a narrative to the music and the lyrics and it lets the audience
follow what they think/believe is a true relationship. It lets the audience connect with the lyrics of the song more as they are able to follow a story as well as listen to her music, and this also follows the conventions of the indie genre and another theory of Goodwin's as there is a balance between narrative and performance.

The artist is represented as somebody who doesn't push the boundaries of her music genre but still follows the codes and conventions of her typical music genre. Although she combines both pop and indie within her music she combines the two conventions and makes them her own in her own way. She is represented as quite innocently in love and innocent within her personality and this is seen through mis-en-scene body language/facial expressions and voyeristic shots. Her body language is relaxed when she is around people and her facial expressions are subtle and homely, something that she shows to the audience with the connection between her eye contact and the camera. It makes her look innocent as she doesn't show any other emotion apart from love and be wilderness. The use of voyeristic shots where she looks at her partner without him knowing shows how besotted she can possibly be with love, and how she thinks love can be a beautiful thing that makes you feel special. This makes a relationship with the audience as the other person/the person she is looking at is oblivious to the love she gives to him and this could relate to many of her fans lives.
She is also represented as realistic and relatable. This is shown through the use of mis-en-scene clothing, wearing bagging clothing, big cardigans , your day-day clothing in the normality of everyone else. These specifically connect with the audience as they are able to see that she is a relatable artist, that she isn't trying to impress anybody.

The target audience is very specific within this particular music video as it would be for a niche audience, this is because the songs lyrics are very heartfelt and possibly complicated for the younger generation. I believe that the audience is aimed for ages 13-35 as this is where people find love the most difficult and obvious to them. This will connect with this audience as they will be able to follow the narrative better and connect better with the artist as they can see how the relationship Is and how in love the pair are. In the music video it also shows both their mischievous sides of their relationship and where the target audience is based on young adults and teens usually that is a stereotype to go with their relationship so that is why they can relate to it better as they ave either the same problems or the same fun as Ellie Goulding and her partner do in this music video.

Mis-en-scene is represented in this music video as relatable and realistic. She follows the generic conventions of a indie genre as she is wearing bagging jumpers, abnormal hats and tight bottom clothing throughout the entire music video. The cardigans/jumpers are over sized and this gives a relatable and realistic approach to the music video and this will connect and make a relationship with the audience as she is making her clothing relatable to the audience as it is your day-day clothing. The audience will relate to the artist more in this way as they will believe she is normal just like them despite having a career in the music industry, and shows the audience she isn't try to impress anybody with her look, she just wants to show them her music and not let the audience focus too much on her image.
The location is very simplistic and this is very conventional to this particular music genre as it makes the audience feel that the music video isn't out to impress anybody it is to show that she is all about her singing and not just her image. The simplicity of the setting makes the song feel more relatable to the audience as you wouldn't expect to see an indie video in such a large, public place with lots of people. It's relatable to the artist in a sense it shows off her personality, by being in a natural environment it makes the artist more relatable and the setting being calm and relaxed in an everyday setting, shows she wants to be portrayed as someone who can be relatable to her audiences and somebody who can show be true to her personality.

Cinematography camera angles, a variety of close-ups, long shots and mid-shots show a relationship between Ellie Goulding and a man who love each other and the connection they share as partners. This is essential within a music video as it gives a narrative to the music and the lyrics and it lets the audience follow what they think/believe is a true relationship. It lets the audience connect with the lyrics of the song more as they are able to follow a story as well as listen to her music, and this also follows the conventions of the indie genre and another theory of Goodwin's as there is a balance between narrative and performance. The close ups particularly let the audience see more of the artist, for example their facial expressions and this will connect with the audience as they are able to see a real image of what the artist looks like and by giving eye contact towards the camera the audience are able to see that she is willing to connect with the audience more than some stereotypical  artists would be, and is more willing to show her personality through her music.

I Need Your Love - Ellie Goulding

This music video is varied between two different genres from Ellie Goulding, and these are both pop and indie. She combines the two genres together to collaborate a whole different type of genre, something that shows her performance side and one in which lets her also show her personality through two different genres.
There are many ways in which Dyer’s theory is used within this music video. Firstly it shows, like the first music video, the common values of music stardom, originality, creativity and talent. Richard Dyer says that a star is an image, and not a real person, they are constructed through the record label. Although this music video shows her in a narrative based video to not just her vocals, but a possible relationship or a story behind herself that she wants to show to her audiences, she has not always been able to control what she does in the music videos as the record labels have a certain image/criteria that they want her to follow, and in order to pursue her career in the music industry artists are made to follow their record label in order to succeed. This music video follows this specific theory of Dyer's as, from previous music videos we see her using not as much narrative within her video, but by including a narrative it makes the song more realistic for the audience as they are able to follow a storyline, believing it shows a relationship of their artist, something they may want to follow.

Dyer says that the incoherence of the star image ensures that audiences continually strive to 'complete' or to 'make sense' of the stars image. This is usually achieved by continued performance which promises the completion of the image but it is always ultimately unsatisfying.  This is shown in this music video through the showing of her entire image with the use of long shot and also close ups of her mis-en-scene elements make up and costume whilst also showing her perform. This creates her star image as she is constantly wearing modern clothing but her image always changes and this makes the audience want to copy her style of clothing but as she changes it frequently she isn't always in the same clothing, so therefore the audience constantly strive to be just like her and are not fully satisfied in the end. It also makes the audience want more than what they get, this constantly makes them want what they can’t have so therefore continue to like Ellie Goulding as an artist.

Goodwin’s theory is used in many ways. One in which it is used is through the use of balance between narrative and performance base. We see this through the use of cinematography and the wide range of camera angles used, specifically close-ups and long shots. This shows the narrative of the pair who are in love and the journey they take together whilst letting the artist connect with the camera through mis-en-scene body language and eye contact. This allows the audience to connect with the artist more as the balance between the two lets them follow the narrative whilst also seeing the artist in her element of performing; it lets the audience believe they are part of her music or that she is directing the song to them.

Another way in which she follows Goodwin’s theory is through the use of the visuals matching the lyrics of the song. This is evident through the use of the lyrics for example ‘I need your love’ this particular lyrics links with the visuals as we see the pair in bed together laughing and joking around, and this signifies they need each other to stay happy and strong as a united couple. This is essential in this music video as they are able to give a story to the audience to follow, and it also helps the audience to understand the lyrics in more detail. This theory lets the audience create a better relationship with the artist as they are able to connect with the narrative and also the artist in a more intense and personal way.

Another way in which this follows part of Goodwin’s theory is that the music video follows the genre characteristics. This involves in the music video for example, she follows the pop genre more particularly than the indie genre as she uses generic mis-en-scene clothing. For example she uses rather revealing and sexy clothing which is stereotypical in a pop genre as it shows off the figure of the artist whilst also promoting her femininity. It incorporates some of the indie style with the clothing on the top half being fairly baggy showing she can be quite shabby and scruffy, which is stereotypically what all indie artists look like; however she has combined the two together to show both the indie and pop genre together to link to her song. This is essential within a music video as it shows the image of the artist to the audience and this image could inspire the image an style of many of her fans, as this could eventually build a relationship with the audience as they will want to see more of her and look more like her, which means they will not be fully satisfied as her image constantly changes.
The artist is represented as somebody who is very talented and diverse. She comes across through the use of her mis-en-scene clothing as somebody talented as she is challenging her genre by combining it with another. She uses many of the different conventions throughout showing off her skills as an artist. The use of performance and narrative base specifically shows her as being both an actor and a performer and this relates to the audience as they are able to follow a storyline and also see her in a different light when she is performing. Her body language is relaxed when she is around people and her facial expressions are subtle and homely and she looks besotted with her partner and this is something that she shows to the audience with the connection between her eye contact and the camera and her body language towards her partner which is always relaxed and shy. It makes her look innocent as she doesn't show any other emotion apart from love and be
wilderness. The use of voyeuristic shots where she looks at her partner without him knowing shows how besotted she can possibly be with love, and how she thinks love can be a beautiful thing that makes you feel special. This makes a relationship with the audience as the other person/the person she is looking at is oblivious to the love she gives to him and this could relate to many of her fans lives. She also makes love look like a beautiful thing, something where two people connect with each other and that they do not need anybody else in their lives.

The target audience is very specific within this particular video as it would again like the video beforehand be to a niche audience. This is because the lyrics are about love, and a growing partnership and this could be seen as complicated for a younger audiences.
I believe that the audience is aimed for ages 15-25 as this is where people find love the most difficult and obvious to their lives more than an older generation would or even a younger generation. This will connect with this audience as they will be able to follow the narrative better and connect better with the artist as they can see how relationships can be amazing and passionate and how in love the pair are in the music video. In the music video it also shows both their mischievous sides of their relationship and where the target audience is based on young adults and teens usually that is a stereotype to go with their relationship so that is why they can relate to it better as they have either the same problems or the same fun as Ellie Goulding and her partner do in this music video.
Mis-en-scene is represented in this music video as conventional and realistic. She follows the generic conventions of a indie genre and the pop genre combined, as she is wearing bagging jumpers (silk, long overalls which is conventional to a indie genre whilst also using pop conventions with more mis-en-scene elements with makeup and more revealing clothing on her legs and arms.) The cardigans/jumpers are over sized and this gives a relatable and realistic approach to the music video and this will connect and make a relationship with the audience as she is making her clothing relatable to the audience as it is your day-day clothing. By having the colours white on the top half it makes Ellie looks pure and innocent as the clothing is near to her heart, this could convey the meaning that she has a pure soul. The audience will relate to the artist more in this way as they will believe she is normal just like them despite having a career in the music industry, and shows the audience she isn't try to impress anybody with her look but yet does in some sense as she wants too look stylish but relatable to her audiences, she just wants to show them her music and not let the audience focus too much on her image.

The use of cinematography and the wide  range of camera angles used, specifically close-ups and long shots.
The close ups are used specifically so we can see the artist perform and direct her eye contact to us as the audience and this creates a relationship with the audience as they feel that the artist is singing to them and nobody else. This makes the audience feel connected as the eye contact connects with theirs  and this in a way creates a moment for both the audience and the artist and the fans will feel more comfortable and relaxed with her singing. The constant use of POV shows the point of view of the characters and this shows what the other characters can see. This is essential as it makes the audience connect more with the audience as they are able to see the relationship first hand and feel that they are themselves part of the on screen romance.

The natural setting is constantly in use throughout the music video and this conveys a very indie natural convention. It is so natural that it makes the music video more relatable to the audience. I want to use this within my music video as it shows a convention of a music genre as it shows just a natural persona of the artist and this is shown through the setting.
I have taken inspiration from all of the different micro elements such as cinematography and especially mise-en-scene  such as clothing as I believe it shows off the conventions of the indie genre in so much detail and makes it create a much better relationship with the audience as she can be seen as an artist that is very relatable to the everyday sort of life.
