We had to ask around 40 people for our questionnaire and this was so we could get a range of different opinions and so that the results are more diverse and that It is an unbiased and fair results. Without this our questionnaire wouldn't be equal it would a small result and we wouldn't get a more of a wider range of opinions from a range of different genders and ages. It enables us to see whether the audience like the particular music genre we have chosen, and if not how (with their ideas) on what the think is conventional and give the audience what they want instead of possibly following the general conventions we could try to subvert them. This would help again give us a wider range of answers and try to find out with the qualitative date and some quantative date in what music people expect to see in our genre and what gender and target audience it would be more aimed at.
Questionaire -
- Are you male or female?
- How old are you?
- What do you expect to see in a music video?
- What is your preffered music genre and why?
- Do you like indie music?
- How do you think music aritsts to be portrayed in Indie music videos and why?
- How do you think an indie artist should dress?
- Do you prefer narrative, concept or performance based music videos and why?
- Ellie Goulding is a pop/indie genre artist, do you like or dislike her and why?
- What attracts you the most to indie music videos and why?
We then catergorised and summerised all of our answers and put them into pie charts to see what was favourited most by our audience and whether we could possibly gather anymore ideas from what the audiece want, and whether we could cater for them.
The first question we asked them was how old they were. This closed question allowed us to see what certain target audiences thought of genres and music videos as a whole. This could let us also see the variety that certain age categories thought of what a typical genre should portray and let us decide on our specific genre for our own music video. We also asked a variety of ages so that we were able to make it a fair test, this way we could see what people from different generations thought of music videos.

We have chosen to aim the music video at women as they are most likely to watch music videos involving Ellie Goulding and also more probably able to connect with her as an audience as she is more relatable to a woman than she is a man. She also sings about love most of the time and this would attract mainly the female audiecne as this is something relatable to them. Using this pie chart I intend on aiming this at the female audience as they are more likely connect with the artist that we are using.

The majority of the audience like indie music which gives me confidence that they will like the indie music video that I am going to create.

This pie chart shows what the audience want to see in an artist and their music video. From the above pie chart the larger section is 'Happy' as the audience do not want to be constantly listening to sad songs therefore if they are happy within the music video then they are able to get across the vibe to the audience and therefore the audience will be happy. However this may not fit in with the narrative of our music video due to an abusive drug/alcoholic relationship, but we have included flashbacks of the happiness of the artist throughout her relationship with her partner.
The second largest fractions are 'Respectful' and 'Always Smiling' this can show that the audience are looking for respectful artists who will be a good influence on the audience, especially if they are children or teenagers. If the artists are respectful then the audience and young people will copy this and therefore this creates a positive vibe for the audience. This will help me when making my music video as if I follow and accept what the audience have suggested as this will therefore gain more views and therefore the audience will connect more with the artist herself.

This pie chart shows what the audience thought of how an Indie artist should dress, the majority of the audience explained that they thought an Indie artist should wear baggy jeans as this is what the usual attire is for an indie artist to be comfortable within their music video. This is a relatable clothing as it is what you would expect people to wear on a day-day basis and this then therefore appeals to the audience as they would want to see them acting and looking natural/relaxed.
The next largest fraction is 'Modest' as the audience would prefer that they didn't show off too much skin and looked presentable. This would follow the conventions of a music video as they will see she is following the conventions of the indie genre. The last has equal amounts of people whom chose 'Loose T-shirt' 'Ripped Tights' and 'Boots' this shows that they are aiming for the artist to be modern but relatable and wearing baggy jeans. It will help connect with the audience as again the clothing is very relatable to this specific genre and could inspire other peoples own clothing image.
Using this pie chart will help me decide on what clothes would be appropriate for the music video depending on what the audience to choose, which in this case the main thing they would like the artist to be seen in baggy jeans. We are inspired to try and take these views but have our own take on what the artist will wear in our music video whilst following the conventions.

This pie chart above shows what the preferred genre of the audience is and what they themselves prefer to listen to. There is an equal amount between 'Pop' and 'Indie' as pop is what is in the charts at the moment and therefore are kept up to date with the current music. Then Indie is also some peoples preferred genre as this may relate to themselves and if the song is about a break up of a couple then many girls can relate to this. This will help us to see what the audience prefer, therefore we could use a mix between the indie and pop genre which is mainly what Ellie Goulding is as she can appeal to both audiences. Hip Hop and rock are the next most popular genre as we live in a generation where hip hop is popular and rock as well as you can get pop-rock genres. The last genre that is the least popular is heavy metal which some ages and some audiences are attracted to as this may be what they have been brought up into. This pie chart helps me with my music video because this shows me that most of the audience would prefer either an indie genre or a pop genre therefore I have confidence that the audience are going to like and appreciate the indie genre if this many people out of 40 like this genre then I have confidence that they will like the music video and the song that we will perform as it has a pop beat behind it.

This pie chart shows what the audience would expect to see in an Indie music video, the results will help me to make this indie music video and therefore the main and larger fractions in the pie chart will be used within the music video and therefore I will use them within my music video. Here it shows that the two larger fractions are 'Bright red lipstick' and 'break ups' as this is the main things that you would find in an indie music video. This will help me to differentiate what will be used with my music video and therefore will attract the audience and to gain views. This pie chart will help me with making my music video as the larger fractions are the main features that will be used within the music video and to gain a large audience and popularity.
Conclusion
I found this research extrememly helpful as this helped me to see what the audience would like to see within an Indie music video. The pie charts were thoroughly useful as I was able to see the main features of what the audience wanted in a music video, whereas the vox pops allowed some of the audience to express their views in more detail, this is helpful becuase the audience can express what they would like to see and I can incorperate it into my music video.
If I had to carry out the research again, I would choose to ask 20 males and 20 females to get an equal amount of gender which would give me a range of views from both. We will be including many different micro elements such as the typical conevntions such as mise-en-scene clothing makeup and also what the audience expect to see such as love and breakups within the relationship. We also are going to include a relatable artist that the audience can connect to as a person and see the true personality instead of a fake personality so that they can connect with the atist in a better eay and feel that she is a real person instead of a fake one and we have taken all of these elements from ur results from ehich the audience gave us.
We have made vox pops for or questionaires because we have wanted to improve our proof in which we did ask lots of people with the audience and the questionnaire t answer it and give us a variety of different answers. By including these vox pops other people will be able to see what other different audiences think of different music genres and also into mainly the indie genre and the different thing tat people want and want to expect within these certain typesof music videos. It also enables u to confirm what we answers we have been given to get the most accurate results and so we can take on board really what they have said about the indie music genre/music videos.
A youth subculture is a group of people who are united through a common value system and tastes such as clothes and musuc etc or a group of people who are positioned outside of the ainstream who go against what is popular. This will be applied to our music video as it we could possibly go with what the majorty of the audience thought should be included within the music videos or instead try to subvert and go with the not stereotypical things to try and gain a better and new audience. We will proably go with the fact that youth subculture shows common values so that the audiences can connect with the music video more as one audience instead of all trying to figure out what our music video is about and having chosen this hopefully it entices the audience to share more common interests through our music video.

You have provided a basic analysis of your results, explaining what the results show, but not going into enough detail on what you will include within your video as a result.
ReplyDeleteYou need to:
1) Make sure you explain what you will include (more specifically) within your music video because of your results
2) Include a paragraph applying one of the subculture theories to your work, explaining why you have chosen this particular one.
3) Elaborate on some of your explanations of results (what attracts you to indie videos)
4) Include a paragraph on why you made vox pops of your questionnaire
5) Include a copy of your questionnaire
You have provided a good analysis of your results, explaining why vox pops are created, and elaborating on some of you analysis in terms of what you will include within your video and why.
ReplyDelete1) Pick one particular youth subculture (McCracken, Hebdige, CCCS) to apply to your results and video
2) Give more specific examples of what you will include in your video for some of your pie charts
