Photo Shoot - Miss Miller

We need to take photographs as we need to show our relevant niche target audience what the artist’s image is and how we are trying to portray her. The photographs show how the artist dresses and to whether she is conventional to her music genre. They also enable the audience to create a better relationship with the artist as they are able to see how she dresses and this will help the audience to get a better feel for her style and this will make it easier for them to then be able to copy the artist’s image to then for fill their needs of becoming more like her with their own image. The images will be used to the help us create a magazine advert to promote the artist and her music/image and also use these images to help us create a digipak for the artist and her song/album. These pictures would give an insight to the artists natural setting, doing the things she loves to do without being to posy and unnatural. These images for the digipak are so that the audience can see the full image of the artist, and gather her personality from the photographs, enabling them to see her as somebody who is rebellious but conventional to her genre with the use of mis-en-scene clothing, body language and facial expressions. It is important for us to take a variety of different pictures to show the artist’s image off in many different angles and show her personality through her image. This will then let the audience share a more personal relationship with the artist as they see her in her element and also give the audience more than what they would usually get giving a better more personal relationship between the artist and her niche target audience.

The first image I have taken is the artist in a more grungy/natural setting behind a garage and posing up against a brick wall. This included the mise-en-scene element iconography using a guitar to show a convention of indie music genre as this is stereotypical instrument that they play. The mise-en-scene clothing used was very conventional to an indie music genre in many ways; this included a blue, baggy denim jacket, a red/black checked shirt, tight leather leggings/grey jeans, and burgundy doc martin boots. We used these as we thought that the colours were very natural and grungy looking so we could give the artist the stereotypical indie image so that she would appeal to her target audience.

The iconography when using the guitar we positioned it so that it was centre of attention just like the artist so that the lighting would catch the two and then the setting would be darker in order to make them centre of attention and the main focus of the photograph. We had intended to use this particular picture for our main image on our magazine article as it showed the artist with many different stereotypes of the indie genre and I believed that it promoted the genre very well in that sense due to the iconography being conventional and the clothing as well; which would therefore promote the artist in a positive way.

This photograph is conventional to our chosen music genre as the mise-en-scene clothing includes your stereotypical bandana, big hair but natural hair (combed back to create volume) blue, baggy denim jacket, a red/black checked shirt, tight leather leggings/grey jeans, and burgundy doc martin boots. This is what you would stereotypically see within an indie music video as the tight clothing on the bottom half shows her figure which shows of her sexuality as an artist without being too provocative.
Another convention used within this picture is the use of iconography, the guitar. This was used as it was stereotypical a instrument that an indie artist would play and introduce into an indie music video/photo-shoot. This shows the talent of the artist and shows that she is controversial as she can sing and play an instrument and these shows off her musical talent. It also creates a better relationship between the audience and the artist as this could possible inspire the target audience to take up a musical instrument possibly the guitar to make them more relatable and more like their artist that they inspire to be, and for fill their needs as fans.
I think that the body language of the artist is good as I believe it shows a rebellious side to the artist, that in which it shows her giving some attitude and the stance is strong whilst her face says different as it is soft and gentle due to the subtle/naturalistic makeup. The dark background and the light on the face contrast with each other as it makes the artist stand out, and this makes her centre of attention. This is what you need within a digipak and a magazine advert as you need the artist to be centre of attention in order to make her notciable and recognisable to the target audience, with the low key lighting in the background and high key lighting on the artist again make her centre of attention. This will help her too create a better relationship with the audience as she is able to show the audience what her personality is like through the image and her clothing could also create a better relationship with the audience as they are able to replicate her image and her style.

The next image is of the artist and the use of the cinematography camera angle close up, and we have particularly taken this image as it shows the full face of the artist, and the facial expressions and eye contact will connect the artist to the audience in many ways. We found that this image was conventional to an indie music genre as it shows a close up of the artist which in theory follows Goowin's theory, as he believes that there should be many close upsn of the artist to develop a better relationship between the audience and the artist themselves. It follows the streotypical conventions of the indie genre as the use of mis-en-scene clothing, for example the red bandana is highlighted by the high-key lighting so it therefore shows off her face as it pull her hair back. The use of the bandana was convetnional as by researching indie artists, this was one piece of clothing that they constantly used to give them the edge they needed which made their face stand out more and make them centre of attention. The soft facial expressions were to show her subtleness as an artist and give away characteristics of her personality through thr expressions on her face. We used this as we wanted the audience to believe that our artist was a kind and gentle person who wanted to then therefore show the audience by tilting her head to the side and giving them direct eye contact to the camera. This would of then therefore created a better relationship with the adueicne and they would of believed that the aritst is directing her album at them and not everybody else. We also used mis-en-scene body language for this particular image where she has the peace sign over her eyes. This image was created as she is showing her personality connoting she is a peaful person and it also goes over the eyes initiating that she can only see peace within the world and nothing else. It also highlights her eyes as it captivates the aduience with the direct eye contact, leaving them focussed on her face and nothing else.
We intend to use this image particularly on our digipack, preferably the front cover as the camera angle close-up highlights the features on the artists face and makes her centre of attention. It also shows many of the different convetions of a indie music genre with the mis-en-scene elements makeup (especially the eye makeup), clothing, facial expressions and body language. This image will then therefore promote the artist in a positive light as she is recognisable to her audiences and promotes just her features of her face, showing that she isn't worried about what people think of her clothing, she just wants to show that she made the album, being centre of attention but in a way that promotes her personality in a good yet sophisticated way. By having this on our digipak it will also enable the audience to connect with the artist more and create a better relationship as they are able to see and focus on just the artist, and not all the added extra elements that are usually used within a photograph.
The image is very conventional to the indie music genre as it uses many of the different micro-elements that are meant to be included and use by indie music artists. We have had conventional mis-en-scene elements, especially clothing with the red bandana as these are streotypically used within this genre to highlight the facial features on the artist's face. We have also used elements such as subtle makeup, this is commonly used by indie artists so that they are portrayed as natrual people, and not superficial like many other genres, it creates a better relationship with the audience as they are able to see that they are not clones of every other artist, they are different and natrual to themselves and their music, it gives them a more personal feel to the aduience instead of created a relationship that would streotypically be fake and false just in order to get fans and a target audience. It subverts the genre also as you wouldn't streotypically see any peace signs within the genre/music/photographs as it could possibly take away the attention of the artist; but we have use it in a way that highlights pin points on the artists face so that we can then therefore focus on the artist and her features whilst she portrays her soft, peaceful personality through the use of her mis-en-scene body language.
I believe that the high-key lighting highlighted on the artist's face particuarly and highlighting her blue eyes is a great feature for our photograph/digipak; this is because I believe it shows key essential elements of facial expressions and eye contact which are neeed to then connect the artist and the audeince to then therefore create a better relationship between the two. It shows conventional meaning to it but also a personal feel as the audience believe that they artist is looking just at them and nobody else, which could have a hidden meaning of the artist directing her album at the audience and not anybody else.
I think that it will create a better relationship with the audience as they are able to connect better with the artist as they can see her fcial features better due to the closeup and that this will entice the audience to therefore conenct better with her as they will see elements they may not have seen on the artist before, this also could be the closest they ever get to the artist and then they will be able to cherish her album better than what they would if the camera angle used was a long-shot or different angle.

This particular photograph was taken to show the more rebellious side to the aritst. This was so we could try to show more of her personality through something that is seen to be socially respectable instead of showing her rebellious side through something that would be innapropirate and socially unnaceptable. This was a mid-shot/high angle of the artist and we used this particular camera angle so that we were able to see the convetions that she portrays through the indie genre getting the use of mis-en-scene clothing, and also iconography. This photograph shows many different conventions and we use this photo so that we could show the convetnions whilst also showing a more subverted rebellious side to the indie genre artist. A piece of iconography that subverts the stereotypes is the use of the cigarette.  This shows the use of fire and was included so that we could show the relativeness of the album and the single of our music video Burn and to also show that she is a rebellious girl and not your completely stereotypical indie person. This will create a relationship with the audience as it will show a more rebellious side to the artist and to the artists personality as well.

This could also create a better relationship with the audience as they may have a better understanding to the artist and they maybe inspired to take up an instrument to themselves as the artist is playing one an they want to copy/be just like them.

We have taken this particular image as we wanted the main element here to be on the mis-en-scene clothing of the artist. Thi is because we wanted the audience to see what the artist truly is like with her conventional indie genre and to let the audience connect and possibly copy her more than they would of. The close up main focus is on the bright eyes and the eye contact with the camera as it looks directly into the camera that the artist is able to connect with the audience and make the audience believe that she is looking directly at them and noboy else. We intend to use this image particularly maybe in the front of the digipak so the the audience are focussedon the eye contact of the artist and nothing else.

This will help her too create a better relationship with the audience as she is able to show the audience what her personality is like through the image and her clothing could also create a better relationship with the audience as they are able to replicate her image and her style.
We found taking the pictures for our photoshoot as I believe that where we took a few whilst filming it made them easier to take as I was able to take control and get into the character of the artist so posing for the photo shoot was rather exciting and something that I thought I took very easily. We also looked at other indie artist album covers and magazine articles to get inspiration about clothing and also body language and cinematography that we could use for the photo shoot. We mainly used closeups and longshots for our photographs. I feel we particularly did well the use of the lighting on the face of the artist. This was because we figured out our own way, by using the flashlight on the iPhone to shine onto the artists face to highlight the her facial features and show the direct contact of the artist towards the camera and the audience. We feel like we struggled with trying to keep the camera still, as where we were outside we didn't have anything to support our hands or arms whilst taking the pictures so when taking them they either came out blurry or shaky. We over came this by working as a team and then therefore balancing the camera hand on our knee or by using our other hand to support our arms and then the photos came out perfect.
Overall we have given our artist a soft peaceful representation so that we could give her a stereotypical indie artist persona so that she is relatable to her specific target audience.
