Risk Assessment - Miss Georgiou

A risk assessment was put in place in order to let us realise the different hazards and risks that we could possible come across whilst filming our music video. By creating a risk assessment we were able to make a perception of what to look out for when we are filming, this ranged from a number of elements and this made us more aware of what to look out for when we are filming in order to give us the best possible time for filming the music video.
This will assist us with filming as again it will let us know the risks that we could face when filming.

There were many risks in which we encountered whilst filming which we also tried to overcome whilst filming. One was the risk of somebody tripping over the tripod. This was something so simple yet a risk to all involved in filming. By tripping over the tripod we endangered not only ourselves but those around us and could possibly result into injury due to surrounds such as Camden lock river, concrete, other people around us, fences etc. To try to overcome this particular hazard we decided to keep the tripod away from anybody there so nobody had the tripping hazard and then therefore could not result into injury. By keeping it out of the way and constantly having somebody to hold the tripod we were able to keep ourselves injury free and let us take more awareness of the people and their welfare. Although when filming this didn’t occur as we carried out the needed precautions just in case something did happen, the weather was wet and windy so we kept an either further distance from the people around us and the river and covered the tripod so that it was made more aware to us and the people around Camden so nothing was damaged or broken and so people didn’t fall into it.

Another risk that we could have possibly had was the risk of falling into the cannel. This was something we had to take extra caution of as this could of resulted into many problems such as drowning, hitting out head on something, boats going in and out of the cannel etc. This was obviously one of our bigger problems due to the cannel not really having an barriers to stop people from getting too close to the cannel, so in order to obviously try and overcome any potential risk we decided that distance was needed especially from the cannel in order to prevent any risk that could occur from falling in. By doing this we were able to also prevent any damage to the filming equipment that would have resulted into technical failures if broken or destroyed by falling in or dropped. Although when filming this didn’t occur as we carried out the needed precautions just in case something did happen, the weather was wet and windy so we kept an either further distance in case we were blown into the cannel.

Burning ourselves on a lighter was another risk that was more than highly likely to happen. Where none of us were accustomed to using one it was fairly difficult to use and this could have resulted in us potentially burning ourselves with the fire through the lighter. This could be prevented by keeping it away from certain features such as the face and body parts and keeping it at a distance from any open skin or clothes. We could also prevent this by keeping water close by in case any chance burning of the skin or clothes does happen that we can put it out immediately and then sooth it and prevent any infection that maybe caused. This is a risk that we must take full awareness of due to people around us as well and the potential risk of them being burnt too, so precautions were made. This never occurred when filming as the precautions were made and by practicing using the lighter before filming it enabled us to be more confident in what we were doing and therefore the precautions were not needed but we still persisted with them just in case.

Another risk was the risk of being down alley ways at night time with barely any light and looking suspicious to passers-by and neighbours too. To be able to prevent this risk we were able to inform any people that may have been affected by our filming what we were doing and our purpose and get their permission to film near their properties or within the area they were in. Luckily people were completely fine with the idea of filming for our music video and continued what they were doing. We also gave ourselves more light in the alleys ways by using flashlights to make ourselves aware of our surroundings and the people around us, and more importantly letting the people around us where we are due to the darkness. This obviously happened whilst filming in the dark but all precautions were taken to ensure the quality of our filming.

One thing that could have possibly been a risk was getting trampled on in Camden Lock and this was due to the high density of people in one area and the market also. This was prevented and could have been prevented by moving away from the larger crowds and finding more of a rural area within Camden where people were not a major issue to our filming. This would of prevented any arguments and possibly injury that of occurred due to being in a large crowd of people. Whilst filming we made sure we took the main precaution of moving away from large crowds as we wanted to remove ourselves from any possibility of any damage to ourselves, our filming and the filming equipment.

Lastly the other risk that could possibly happen was hitting people with our equipment such as the tripod and potentially hurting them or injuring them. This was prevented by taking equal amounts of time and taking turns between our group to hold the equipment to we didn’t feel the heaviness after a long period of time and so we didn’t get tired and possibly dropping the equipment also. This was affective as it also showed how we could work well as a team and together.

One risk that happened during our filming was the horrific weather which has bad winds and rain throughout the time we filmed in Camden. This started off as a problem as all risks could have occurred such as damage to our equipment, falling into the cannel due to bad weather and bad filming quality. We decided as a group to overcome this by waiting inside until the weather brightened up and was at a good place to film so that we could steadily place the equipment in a safe position in order to film. This was good for our team to decide on together as it shows that if filming was going to cause any risk we would of tried to prevent or precaution ourselves in any way.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of what a risk assessment is and the purpose that it has to a production. You have made a start in considering a number of risks and hazards, but further discussion of each point is needed to demonstrate further understanding.

Did you counter any more risks while you were filming?

  2. This post now demonstrates proficient planning techniques and this is because you have explored the hazards in more depth.
