Initial Group Planning Ideas - Miss Georgiou

In my group I have two other peers that I am working with on this project. I have Charlotte Monksfield and Leandra Saunders. These are the group members that I will be working with the entire year, to make sure that we have contributed as a team to our music video. We will all have allocated roles within the group and will work as a team to create a music video together.

In our first meeting we sat down as a group and planned a mind map of all the different inspirations from artists that we thought had a different range of genres within their music or music that we simply thought was interesting. We were able to annotate the different songs from the artists and make a decision as a group on the main artists we wanted to pursue further into our project. This also helped us to plan what type of music genre we wanted to do as we wanted to give a personal feel to our music video and this made us as a group discuss many of the codes and conventions to different genres. As we discussed different music genres and different songs we noticed that each genera had its own very different codes and conventions; - we then noticed that the main genres we wanted to look at were Pop/Indie, as we thought it had the most popular and entertaining conventions within a music video and they were all very similar.
To summarise the artist's and the specific songs that we wanted to look at were:
  • Ellie Goulding - 'Burn'
  • Ed Sheeran - 'Drunk'
  • Katy Perry - 'Part Of Me'

I would be easier for us to come up with original ideas for the music video and explore our own creativity/perspective of what the song means to us. We printed off the lyrics and annotated the song to make it more visual and to understand the narrative better.
The initial ideas of the artist helped us to annotate some of the lyrics and to see whether we could gather any information on more of the conventions and also see if we could have any ideas from this. We annotated many of the lyrics and planned narrative from this as we looked at many of the codes and conventions that we could use within our music video. This included looking at specific essential elements that we could include within our music video. For example, by looking at the lyrics we looked specifically at mis-en-scene elements, such as clothing, makeup and iconography. The mis-en-scene elements that we used were clothing where we introduced iconography using a guitar to show a convention of indie music genre as this is stereotypical instrument that they play. The mise-en-scene clothing used was very conventional to an indie music genre in many ways; this included a blue, baggy denim jacket, a red/black checked shirt, tight leather leggings/grey jeans, and burgundy doc martin boots. We used these as we thought that the colours were very natural and grungy looking so we could give the artist the stereotypical indie image so that she would appeal to her target audience. This is what you would stereotypically see within an indie music video as the tight clothing on the bottom half shows her figure which shows of her sexuality as an artist without being too provocative. The guitar was used as it was stereotypical a instrument that an indie artist would play and introduce into an indie music video/photo-shoot. This shows the talent of the artist and shows that she is controversial as she can sing and play an instrument and these shows off her musical talent. It also creates a better relationship between the audience and the artist as this could possible inspire the target audience to take up a musical instrument possibly the guitar to make them more relatable and more like their artist that they inspire to be, and for fill their needs as fans.
By planning this as a group we were able to discuss the certain essential mis-en-scene elements that were needed for our music video, we also discussed the matter of cinematography elements such as camera angles close-ups long shots, high angles low angles and many more to see what went well with the footage we were planning on filming, and also to follow different theory's such as Goodwins and Dyer's star theory.

We then gathered many ideas about all the different elements on two A3 pieces of paper. This helped us to plan what different micro-elements we were going to include such as:

 - Mise-en-scene = iconography, costume, makeup, hair, body language
-Artist Representations
- Cinematography = camera angles, closeups, long shots, high angle, low angle
- Editing = quick, slow, colour filter etc
-Style of Music Video
- Codes & Convetions of Music Genre - cinematography, mise-en-scene, clothing, iconography, editing etc
-Target Audience
-  Music Video Theory - Does it follow Goodwins or Dyer's Star Theory?
- Music Video inspirations and research carried out
                                                                                - Annotation of Lyrics

By annotating these different micro-elements as a group, we were able to discover many different connotations of our specific music genre. we looked specifically at mis-en-scene elements, such as clothing, makeup and iconography. The mise-en-scene clothing creates a better relationship between the audience and the artist as they maybe able to copy the style of the artist

During the planning stages we came together as a group and filled in what we would include in essential areas such as, mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, style of music video and more. To help us have a clear idea and vision of what we want our music video to contain to help us produce a successful music video.
For cinematography we agreed as a group that we will include mid shots to identify the main character in the music video. Long shots to depict sadness as the song is based on a sad experience. We will use establishing shots to show the audience the location and setting to add more depth to the music video. Close up shots are typically used from the demands of the record label and to allow the artist to create motifs for themselves. So we said that close up shots are essential as they sell the artist, show emotions (connect with the audience) and help represent the artist. Furthermore, we will include zooming in/out, panning movements and more to make the video more interesting and will add something different to the visuals.

Our creativity came into play when we had to decide on the editing techniques that we will use. We agreed on using a simple colour scheme which would be conventional to a indie music genre, We also agreed on fades, blurs then focuses and a time lapse surrounding the main character. To express the characters emotions and heighten the meaning of the lyrics.
For the setting we said a natural location such as Camden, a beach forest, conventional location. The location has to be natural to show a ntrual relationship for the artist and her partner.   iconography will also stick to conventions by using a guitar which Ellie Goulding
plays and the sound of a guitar is in this song. So the visuals and music will match. The costume for this character will be kept casual, simple maybe a cardigan and some rough clothing will fit in with the look we are going for. Casual clothes are common in this genre, usually done so the audience focus more on the artists music than their appearance. And to add a sense of realism.
The facial expressions shown will be very natural and happy and some depressing due to arguments in relationships, depressed, sadness in eyes and anger to convey the artists frustration and will help make the music video more intense. We chose low-key dark lighting for when the character is upset and sad and natural day lighting for when the artist is with her partner and they are happy to show a loving relationship. These types of lighting will increase the suspense and mystery for the music video. Something which indie music videos like to include, an eerie feel.

Lastly, for miss-en-scene the camera positioning. The character/artist will be located in the centre of the camera and cloes ups especially to add more emphasis of the character and to have a her as centre of attention. The
rtist will be represented as a very strong, happy and an individual that loves the though of love and relationships and somebody who is relatable.
The artist will be more relatable to the audience as he will look like an ordinary girl in a relationship making the artist seem more real and honest and relatable.

We will include performance, concept and narrative into our music video style. So it will be more entertaining and interesting. The performance will be lip singing, music video and the playing of the guitar. This will allow the music video to be visually appealing to the audience. The narrative will be a ntrual happy relationship between boy and girl and then haing the bad side such as the abusive relationship too. The concept is about an abusive relationship so that the audience can relate to the relationship more than they usually would.
The target audience which we have chosen is 16-25. We decided on this age range because we are young ourselves so we will find it easier producing a video to a target audience that have the same interests and tastes as we do. Also this target audience tend to enjoy watching drama, entertainment and romance in music videos.
We got inspiration from Ed Sheeran Nina Nesbitt and Kate Nash and tese two artists helped us to understand the indie genre better. Which also helped us to decide on the narrative as their music videos tend to have great narrative content. So it helped us to identify links between visuals and lyrics and become more visually imaginative. As their is not limit to our imagination in the music video. We discovered that we just have to show the lyrics in a music video to how we all visually interpret it.
Codes and conventions of the indie genre in this music video will be followed the relevant micro elements such as, mise-en-scene an isolated, low budget setting, costume which is very realistic and casual. Cinematography many close ups to add more emphasis to the song.
Music video theory we said that we will make sure that we will use Goodwin's theory by making the music and visuals match, close-ups allowing the artist to develop motifs and lastly, intertextual references.Dyers star theory will also be used on the basis of making the artist relatable, having an a pealing characther/personlaity to create profits for the institution (hegemony).

Our next meeting as a group consisted of applying for copyright, researching into our chosen music genre and starting to consider the outline of the music video. This enabled us as a group to firstly get in contact with the music artists record label and ask for their permission to use their song 'Burn' in our music video. We had to get inc contact with them via many different social networking sites and also by email, this included facebook and twitter and and email providing information on why were using the music and whether we have their permission. We obviously understand that record labels are very busy and may not get back to us in time, or at all, but we are waiting to still hear from them to confimr that we are allowed to use their song for our recreation of the Ellie Goulding song 'Burn'. When researching into the chosen gener we looked at the many different micro-elements in order to see what is conventional to our specific chosen genre. By researching many different indie artists for example, Nina Nesbitt and Kate Nash, it enabled us to see the streotypes that we could use to show and to prove that our artist is an indie/pop artist. It gave us many ideas on mis-en-scene, cinematography and also editing, and some of the things that are key

The storyboard was planned out in a group, during a lesson. We worked as a group but took turns to sketch and write on the storyboard. This was quite a lengthy process, as many storyboards had to be made. But once creating these storyboards it showed us what we agreed on as a group and how far we can go with it, to deliver a great music video to our audience. It really made our general ideas more specific and polished as everyone got to speak and we all had fresh ideas which made us have a better plan for a music video. We incorporated as much of each members idea as possible, to ensure every member was happy and that the plan was detailed and unique.
This allowed our group to become more organised, agree on the days and times to meet up with one another. And update each other on coursework and more. I feel like this was easier than sticking to a filming schedule, it was better to be more liberal about the situation and negotiate on a suitable date or time during the week.It is essential to carry put group meetings as this shows that we are able to work together as a group efficiently and to agree and cooperate well together in order to get the best ideas as a group for our music video. This also allowed us all to get our viewpoint and ideas across and decide what we thought as a group would be best to carry out for our music videos and what ideas would be best suited to our music genre.
We have worked and co-operated well as a group as we decided and took on point everybody's ideas, and decided to take into account everybody's ideas instead of mainly one. This helped us to listen to each others ideas and then to work better as a group.

To conclude, planning was beneficial and planning as a group was even better. As the more people in a group, the more ideas and skills are involved. Which will more likely mean that our work will be polished and effective. The group planning allowed us to be organised, improve team work skills and generate more ideas for a complex task.

  1. This post demonstrates some evidence of group planning. It is clear to see that you and your group have considered some inspiration for your music video and some of the planning that you have taken. However, you need to elaborate on the meetings that you have untaken in a lot more detail, by considering your planning sheets further. This can be achieved by focusing on the style, micro elements and artist representation in further detail.

  2. The table that you have included above, helps to demonstrate further evidence of the group planning and discussions that you and your group have undertaken.

However, you need to ensure that you have included points on all the meetings that have been untaken, as you have missed out on a few, such as editing and the rough cut!
