Advertising, can announce new and existing products or services they are
trying to sell to the public.. Advertising is a strategy used to grab the
attention of potential customers. Advertisements use language and communication
techniques that appeal to consumers so that they end up buying new albums and
products to do with the artist. By using strategic language or images in an ad,
the company can influence consumers to buy their product. Strategic language
and imagery in advertising helps point out the strengths of a product or
service, which can influence consumers' purchasing decisions.
There are many more ways in which a magazine advert is used and the purpose of them:
The two adverts I have chosen to analyse are one by my artist who is Ellie Goulding to see whether we could get any inspiration from this to include into our own music video reinvention of hers and to see whether it could have any representation of her within the advert.
Consumers to perceive the brand in a certain way. Advertising is
influential by nature, therefore, different elements within an ad, such as the
text and images, can be positioned in order to add value to the brand.
There are many more ways in which a magazine advert is used and the purpose of them:
- To promote an artist’s album
- To reach a wider target audience (people that read magazine as well as listen to music
- To act as a constant reminder of the upcoming album
- To link in with other advertisements of the album to create more marketing
- To get support from other companies that could push sales further
- To link in with any articles within the magazine on the artist (benefits for both the magazine and artist)

The other advert I am going to analyse is the advert for BenHoward, which is very different to Ellie Goulding's and as they both contrast with each other, despite being from the same genre, I am going to see how it portrays her as an artist and the purpose of why she has included some of the particular elements within this music magazine advert.
This magazine advert 'Lights' portrays Ellie as conventional to her music genre. Despite it having more of a pop genre feel towards this it shows the many indie qualities within.
The artist in this magazine article is made to look like a young girl who is in her teenage years who has made her fame. She is seen as a superstar and is wearing a black dress to come across as though she looks older than her actual age and is therefore seen as an older and important artist. This connects wither audience as despite being able to show and try to relate more to her audience she shows her individuality and the conventional feeling of
The use of the close up image of her shows the audience that she is the main focus of this music album, and that she wants people to see who she really is by seeing different features of her face. This shows the audience what the artist looks like and therefore allows the audience to notice any other work that she may also take part in.
The use of mise-en-scene body language can show her femininity and that she is very open within her songs and her feelings which can show the audience with what type of person she is. The stance is very strong and powerful which isn't so conventional to an indie genre but she is trying to portray herself to be somebody that is strong and keeps her head up high and makes the audience possibly feel a sense of pride when seeing this image and the stance she has taken.
The black dress that she is wearing shows the writing as being white, gold and also a black dress can be shown as something that a young person wears to something quite professional and possibly even perform in. This can show that she is a young professional person who is important to the music industry and possibly connect better with the audience as she is showing she can diverse and change her image whenever she wants

Typography:Her name looks like lights that you would see on a theatre which links in with the title of her music album which is "lights". The font is easy to read and looks sophistacated and therefore shows that she is a sophistacated young lady and shows that she is a star with her name lit up in lights.
There is block writing used underneath the main title to show the reviews of the album and what the audience thought of the music artist and the rating that it has been given by different members of the public.
The writing is large and therefore easy to read for the audience to automatically identify the artist as they can see by the large title and the style of the writing that is used and can be shown and identified by the audience.
The style of language used is very simple as it is meant to appeal to a large audience and therefore be able to attract different age ranges.
The design of the magazine artist shows the artist to look like she has gold glitter in her hair to give the impression that she has lights in her hair. This relates to her album name as it shares the same name which is 'Lights' therefore this is to keep the theme of the album and herself consistent with each other. This can relate to the target audience as indie music is all about expressing themselves and being different, therefore the lights in the hair and the adding glitter in the hair is to make the artist seem different. This can be unconventional to an indie music video because indie music artist usually wears baggy trousers and casual clothing but in this magazine advert she is wearing a sophisticated black dress.
Her name is used in the centre of the magazine article so she can promote herself and to show the audience who the artist is. This can also show that as her name is in the centre of the advert then she must be important as her name and her face are the main focuses of the music advert.
The colours used within this music advert are black and gold, they are almost opposite colours so you can se one against the other. The gold lighting can be shown as illuminating lights and bright which is the same colour as her hair. The black may be shown to be quite dull and not interesting but is contrasted with the brightness of the gold that is shown as the title and in her hair.
The black within the magazine advert can represent the blackness or the deepness that she has, as the black is mainly shown from her neck down which may link with her feeling and the blackness that she is dealing with and the emotions that run deep like a deep abyss where her feelings are being held and kept.
The gold used on her face and her hair can represent the sun and the light that radiates from the sun lights the way and shows the way and illuminates the path which is what this artist also shows through her music that she illuminates the way for her audience and therefore creates an escape from the blackness. Her name can also be the light that illuminates the way as it is against the darkness and therefore can be shown as though her name is lit up in lights and showing the way.
This advert promotes the indie music genre by the use of the glitter in her hair can show that this is an indie music genre because indie music artists are those who have their own style of clothing, this can help the audience see that indie music is different and has its own style and therefore gain more audiences.
The advert promotes the artist because of the close up used of the artist to show the audience who she is and the genre that she is mainly related to.
This advert attracts the audience through the use of the contrast of colours, that are seen as sophisticated and different and therefore will attract mainly women who will want to listen to music that would link in with their feelings that women feel.

Representation of music artist:
This artist is represented as slightly different to other artists magazine adverts because this shows that the artist is different and outrageous because he is shown to be scuba diving. Scuba diving is seen as an extreme hobby which many people cannot achieve, therefore this can show that the artist is being shown as extreme and different.
Colours:
The colours used are mainly cold colours which are blues, to represent the sea and the gradual gradient of the colours with the lighter colour blue at the top to represent the sun shining through from the surface and the darker colour below to show the depth of the album and the songs that will be involved. Therefore this shows that the artist is a deep person and shows the audience about what a type of person that they are like.
The white against the blue stands out which shows that the artist likes to stand out against the crowd and likes to be seen as different, especially when it stands out against against the blue.
Design/Layout:
The design and layout of the magazine article is quite simple as the artists name is at the top of the magazine article in a large font to show the audience who the main artist is and to show the audience who he is and the name of the album. The image in the middle which is meant to be the artist looking at the audience. The apparent image of Ben Howard in the centre is to promote him as an artist and that he is the main important artist within this album. There isn't a close up used of the artist but a full body shot to show him scuba diving, this may mean that he doesn't want the audience to see what he looks like and to be judged by his appearance, but would rather be judged on his music as it is more important than an image.
Choice of Images:
The use of the young man scuba diving could show what the artist is like by doing something that no one would like to do, can do, or want to do. The depth of the ocean can show or represent his music and how his music has a deep meaningful meaning behind it. There aren't many images used within this magazine article to show that there is more than what meets the eye, that not everything is shown straight to you but is shown in a different way.
Typography:
The font used within this magazine article is large and easy to read therefore the audience can identify who the artist is off the shelf in a CD store. The name of the artist is in a larger font so the audience can easily identify him. The smaller font used at the bottom of the magazine advert shows clearly when the album will be released, this gives the audience all the vital information that the audience will need.
Style of language:
The style of language used within this advert is simple and easy to read and understand for audience of all ages. The use of the title of the album is called "Every Kingdom" which is appropriate to the cover of the album as there is a water kingdom below the surface of the earth where the fish are. This can therefore show that the artist is trying to reach out to all kingdoms, above water and below.
Connotations of the artist:
The meaning behind this magazine advert can be seen in many different ways, firstly the back image of the ocean can symbolise the music that Ben Howard's music is deep and mysterious because the ocean is also deep and mysterious that may also have something to with the music and the artist himself.
The man scuba diving can show that he is reckless and isn't afraid to do things that some people might to too scared to do, also go places that no man has ever been before, like the depth of the ocean, this can explain or show what type of person he is, daring and reckless.
This is helpful for myself when creating a magazine article for my artist as I can see and compare that from two different genres you can have different ways in showing the audience what the artist is like. The use of colour is very important because that could be used to show the audience what the artist is like as a person, whether they are of a warm character or of a cold character. The music can also be like the person, either cold or warm. There are many different inspirations I have come across in order to make my magazine adverts and one is the fact the artist must be the centre of attention. Although not seen in ben howards magazine advert I believe that the ellie golding advert would be more relevant for our artist as by having the use of the artist being in the middle of the advert we will be able to entice new audiences and let old audience recognise the artist too. It shows more relatability for the audiences as they will be able to connect with the artist more if they see closeups of her and nobody else. The colouring ahs to be natural and nothing to outgoing due to us wanting to keep to the natraul indie convention that they are as natural as they can be and not fake. This would then come across to the audiences that we are keep to the codes and conventions of an indie music genre.
