Planning Cienmatography - Miss Georgiou

Cinematography is very important when planning and making a music video as each specific camera shot used can show many conventions of different music genres and help connect the artist with the audience whilst also showing performance and narrative within the music video. Cinematography can be used to capture the audiences attention and give a wide overview of the setting of the music video and can also show a better insight to the artist if the audience can see more. It is an extremely helpful element and aspect when making a music video as you can make the artist be portrayed in many different ways from many different angles.
There are man different angles that we may use within the making of our music video all to show different aspects of the narrative and performance within our video. We are using many of the elements of cinematography to show the artist within her element of music. Using conventional cinematography elements allows us to show what is specifically used in an indie music genre.
Some of the camera angles we are going to include are:

Close up
Close ups are conventional within an indie music genre because the close up show the emotion of the artist as they sing to the audience when they perform. The use direct eye contact with the camera through close ups and this allows the audience to connect with the artist more as the audience believe the artist is singing to them and this makes the audience feel more of a connection with the artist as they have one on one time with the artist. Close up's can also be used to attract the audience and to draw them into the lyrics more than what they would with any other camera angle. This is due to the fact the eye contact with the camera allows the audience to believe that the artist is singing to them and only them, which allows the audience to feel more connection and feelings with the artist. This camera shot will help represent my artist's feelings through mis-en-scene facial expressions and body language as the closer you can see his/her face the more likely you are able to see the emotions she feels when performing her song to the audience within the music video. The close ups will be used throughout our music video so that we can share the emotions the artist is going through, through her relationship in the music video, it allows the audience to connect more with the narrative in this perspective. This follows the performance style of our music video as it shows close ups of the artist performing to the caera and shows of elements such as her facial expressions and elements of mise-en-scene with iconography with the guitar and natural make up etc. This makes this connect with the audience more as they will be able to see up close what the artist generally looks like and see how she performs and connects with the caerma in order to make her audience feel more special like they are performing for the audience and just them and nobody else.

Two shot
A two shot will be used to show the artist with her partner looking at each other without them knowing, this can show the audience the background story of the artist and what she is going through. briefly from a happy relationship to an abusive relationship including alcohol etc. Show ling the two people together shows that there is a relationship going on and that they are a couple and this is conventional to an indie music video as this is conventionally used to show the relationship beyond the pair, and show them thinking about many different things when they look at each other. This is conventional because indie artists usually sing about relationships and shows also who they are singing about. This helps represent the artist in a positive light as it shows her taste in men and what she would like to find in a guy and the different things that they do together. This could create a relationship with the audience as it give an insight to the relationship of the artist on screen but also what she may think relationships could be like. You can also empathise with the artist as here it shows she is trying to show both opinions and both points of view of their on screen relationship rather than on specific side. This connects with the narrative style of our music video as it shows both the relationship of the artist and her partner and the love between them is shown through the two shot as you can see both their emotions through this camera angle and then that way we can show the audience how they connect as a pair and then that way they can feel that the relationship is true and then that way connect more with the relationship and the artist themselves. It will connect with the lyrics of the song aswell as they are able to show how their love is like a fire and they burn to be together and how the lyrics can have a hidden meaning of love, also in particular the lyric /we don't have to worry about nothing' shows they need nothing apart from eachother. This shows the style of our music video of being naturalistic and focussing more on the narrative side as they can see the main elements of the music video through this element and also see the natura style coming through the performance and also especially the narrative.

 Establishing shot
The establishing shot will show the audience the setting that the artist is in, and those who are around them. This allows us within our music video to show the entire setting which will be conventional to the indie music genre. This is conventional with an indie music
genre because is shows the area in which the artist is and those who are around them so the audience can connect with the surroundings and the artist. This camera shot will help me to represent my artist by showing the audience of what the artist is like and where she likes to be and hang out. The setting also allows us to show the different areas in which the artist visits and this can be relatable for the audience as they will be in relatable areas, giving the audience more connection with the artist as they are able to possibly visit the places the artist has in the music video or may have been there so the audience can therefore believe they are more connected with them therefore have more relatableness within the music video. This show the more narrative style of our music video as it shows the relatable side to the setting. This setting is somewhere where most people would have visited and this shows a relatability to her audience and makes the audience feel that they can connect with her more as they are able to see that she is somebody just like them and not somebody who is all about herself. It shows that she is apart of the real world. This also links in with the style of our music video as it shows that i am following the stereotypes of the indie genre, this meaning the natural style i am trying to create is shown through the setting because i am not creating a new setting, i am using what the world had create and using the elements such as the rivers and the streets that are available to use at no extra cost. This style then links with our product of naturability as the whole entire genre of indie is also natural and therefore makes it more easy for the audience to be able to connect with if the style ad everything connects with the genre.

Medium Shot
The medium shot is used to show the artist and the instrument that she is playing which can show her concentration over the guitar as if she is singing her fee
lings through the guitar/instrument. This shot is conventional because this shows the audience that the artist is musical and can play many different instruments which are again conventional to a indie music genre.  This will help represent the artist as somewhat talented and musical and this can connect with the audience as it will let them believe they can also make music and it could inspire them to take up an instrument as well. This will be specifically used to show the instrument off so that we have some conventional aspects within our music video. This also connects with Dyer's theory of a star as it show that all artist sow talent and our artist will show it through her talent of musical instruments like guitars instead of through performing and narrative. The shows the performance style of our music video and connects with the lyrics of the song as the chorus mentions 'burn' and this to me connotes fire and by performing throughout the chorus with a guitar makes me believe that she is showing how powerful the fire in their relationshuip is and how powerful she thinks her music is aswell. This would create a better relationship with the audience as it shows how much she loves her music and how much she loves her partner, this way the audieince feel more involved with the song. It also makes the audience connedct more with the lyrics as they can see what they mean with the connection of the music with the relationship. It also creates a more personal relationship with the artist as they get to see the inside of the artists home and therefore creates a more naturalitic style to the music video whic is what we want to try and portray throughout.

Zoom in
Zooming in can be shown the artist and to look up at the artist, this is conventional to an indie music genre because in certain types of lyrics you can focus on the artists face by zooming in on them. You won't be able to see the persons facial expression from a distance therefore the zooming in helps the audience showing the facial expression of the artist. This will help represent the artist as different to show the emotion on their face and help the audience attract and feel as though they connect with the artist. This way the audience will be able to connect with the artist more if they are able to see their facial expressions with certain lyrics to show emotion. This follows the style of our music video and it kind of creates a better relationship with the audience as the main focus will be on the artist this shows the audience that the main focus of the music video and shows how she is centre of attention. This connects with the lyrics in some ways as it makes her the cwentre of attention and it shows that her music is the main focus aswell as her.
The target audience can build a relationship with the artist through the camera shorts that I have selected as they are very conventional to our indie music genre, and therefore the facial expression that is involved within the camera shot can help the audience get more involved with the artist and help them get involved with their words and lyrics. The conventional lyrics enable to artist to then therefore connect more realistically with her audience and therefore promote her single in a relatable way.

  1. This post demonstrates some planning techniques. It is clear to see that you have considered the various camera shots that you would like to include within your production. You have made a start in explaining where the technique will be seen and the effect that it will create towards an audience, but further explanation of how it follows the style of your production is needed to demonstrate further planning techniques. Aim to relate back to the lyrics of your song, to support your explanations.

Also aim to include images to support the points that you have made.

  2. You have made a start in exploring your chosen cinematography elements further, but you still need to relate back to the lyrics of your song, to demonstrate further planning techniques, of why you have decided to use certain shots in your production.

  3. This post now demonstrates good planning techniques and this is because you have explored your choices and decisions further. You have made a start in relating your points back to the lyrics of your chosen song, but you need to ensure that you have done this throughout, to extend planning techniques.
