The purpose of a storyboard is to allow and help us to
plan what specific content and elements we are going to include within our music
video. It enables us to plan second by second all the different elements such as
camera angles, location, iconography, sound, editing styles and also the
narrative that will be used as video footage on screen. It also gives us a
better idea on how to plan the way we want to film all of our footage and how
every camera angle will be different throughout the entire music video, this
will make everything more simpler for us to follow and therefore know exactly
what we need to film and include within the editing of our music video without
any confusion through the transition of the making of the music video. It also
allows us as a group to plan certain elements together, and follow a structured
plan instead of creating certain elements that may not flow with the video, and
instead of including elements that we haven’t planned.
I had used many different elements through primary and secondary research. The primary research i used consited of questionnaires, vox pops and feedback i had recieved. The questionnaires allowed us to carry out research about our genre by asking the public certain questions that we thought would help get us feedback about the indie genre. We asked the public a range of questions ranging from how old they were to what they thought was conventional to a indie music video. This enabled us to get more infomation on certain elements and also allowed us to see what our target audience would want in a music video. This would then therefore give us a more relative feel towards the music video whislt being more relatable for the audeince and giving them a better connection and relationship with the chosen artist. This helped us plan our music video as we had to take into account the feedback from the audience and what they wanted to see, as this would of made the music video more relatable to the audience and more convetional to an indie music genre.
Another primary research element we used were pox pops. This included us to, video the questions we asked our target audience in order to see their reactions and their feedback, and it let us remember and see what they said. This also showed that by asking more people we had proof that we had given vaild evidence that we carried out our own research. This also helped us as it made us more confident with the feedback that the audience gave us and this helped us plan our storyboards as we could include the elements in which the audience wanted to see and include them for a storyboard.
Secondary research was used as we started to analyse different music videos that gave us inspirations with the music genre we had chosen which in our case was the indie music genre. By doing this we were able to plan our storyboards as it gave us a better insight to what codes and coventions were used for example location, iconpgraphy, lighting, editing and also the narrative. By analysing different music videos we saw certain elements that were constantly used throughout and this gave us the idea of not to subvert the genre's convetions and follow them, but also subvert them in subtle ways, and to try and find hidden meanings within songs so that the audience feel that the song may have something else to do with it instead of just the simple narratives that alot of the indie genre uses, as the simplicity also represents the artist effectively too. The inspirations we took from this included mis-en-scene elements such as clothing make-up and body language and facial expressions; also camer angles especially close ups of the artist. This gave us inspiration as the natrual locations and all of the other elements gave us the inspiration that the artist should be represented effectively in order to promote her in the right way, and we wanted to to portray the artist as natrual and meanigful and thoughtful and all of this research hekped us to come up with the storyboards for our music video as we included all of the elements the audience and the analysis gave us.

The group and I planned our initial storyboard through
physical paper. This enabled us to sit down around a table and physically plan
step by step all of the elements that we were going to include within it. As we
listened to each second of the song, we were able to analyse lyrics of the song
beforehand to give us a brief encounter of the narrative we were going to
include when filming. This then let us plan the story boards whilst following
the song and the lyrics in order to let the lyrics match the visuals in a way
that could show hidden meanings or a completely different meaning to the
original narrative of the song. We also had included hand-drawn images of what
we wanted to include and a brief explanation of what is going on in the image.
We continued to do this for every different camera angle we wanted to include,
therefore giving us a numerous amounts of storyboards and frames to work with on
our music video.
We shared the roles equally so that we all had a fair
chance of giving ideas to include within the storyboard, and working effectively
and efficiently together as a group. We decided to give each other a specific
role within the group. This included myself being the decider, giving final
approvals and making the final decision with what went into every frame
precisely and drawing the images on the story board briefly and quickly whilst
also planning how long each element would last/how long each frame would last;
Leandra gave ideas about narrative and camera angles specifically so we could
then finally plan the deciding iconography and location which was allocated to
our final group member Charlotte. This helped us to share the responsibility and
give us equal opportunities to share our ideas once we finalised everything.
This also gave us the opportunity to give each other certain roles which allowed
us to guide each other on what we thought was best for each frame of the
storyboard and then let each other decide on the final results. By giving
certain roles and all accepting certain responsibilities we were able to get the
storyboards finished in a quicker amount of time and more efficiently as well
due to us not having too much to do individually.
We followed our storyboards most of the time but we also
filmed a lot in bulk, this is because we tried to keep the filming as natural as
possible capturing moments between our actors that we simple and true to reality
rather than fake and no relatable to the audience. We did make certain elements
that followed the storyboard but recorded more angles so that we were able to
show more footage of the same thing but from other people’s perspectives which
would have given the audience an insight to what they would see if they were in
the music video. We also followed it by filming the clips for a certain amount
of seconds, so that the storyboard gave us an idea of how many seconds to film
things for in order to follow the lyrics and the actual song itself.
However, the storyboards that you have included does not document the whole length of your song, so further planning is required to demonstrate more in depth planning of your music video.
This post demonstrates a proficient understanding of what storyboards are and the purpose that it provides to a production. It is also clear to see that you have considered the primary and secondary research that you carried out, as well as considering your group's inspirations and ideas.
