Planning Magazine Advert - Miss Miller

Magazine adverts are very important as they are able to help promote the artist album in many different ways to help try and attract an audience to the artist. By having a magazine advert the audience are able to connect and find out more information about the artists new single/album and this can be effective as it can promote the artist in a way that the audience may not of seen them before and also as promote them as unique and as an individual. Magazine adverts can also be use to appeal to certain audiences creating a niche audience, instead of creating a wider audience which all have different likes and dislikes. By promoting to certain niche audiences, the artist is capable on focussing on them so that she/he can connect with them worldwide creating globalisation.
I will be creating my own magazine advert in order to promote my group's version of 'Burn' by Ellie Goulding, and by creating a magazine article we are able to connect with the audience in more depth as we are able to show them a smaller bit of information to give them an insight of the artist and also the new album. This is helpful to promote the album and this can be a global thing and can gather many fans over the world. Planning is very important when creating an effective magazine advert as this helps us to know exactly what to put within the advert and to discuss the certain codes and conventions with the genres to include within the magazine advert so that we can appeal to a wider audience.

There are many things that we need to consider in order to create an effective magazine advert, this can include things such as colour, typography, genre conventions, images used, language and design and layout. There are many of the different elements that I will be considering to use in my magazine advert.

Colours:
The colours that will be used within the magazine advert will be natural colours (link with the nature in societies) which include green, yellows, reds and oranges, which i believe is all natural colours. I have chosen to use this as I believe that by using these natrual colours they are also convetional to the indie genre as you want vibrant but natrual colours to represent your artist and by doinbg this we are following the convetnions of the genre. The colours should be soft which can include light versions of blues, pinks, and greens, and  this is conventional to an indie genre because they are known to have a more relaxed and soulful feel towards them unlike pop colours which are conventionally colours such a vibrant pinks and reds and black which are unnatural. By doing this i want it to convey the artist as someone being natural and mellow by using the convetnional yet natural colours, hopefully the colours represent the artist. Within my music video I may follow the conventions or I may subvert them because the title of the song is "Burn" I may decide to add fire and warmer colours into the magazine advert such as, reds, yellows and oranges. This can show the audience that the magazine advert and the colours are supporting a this specific song and that there is a strong connection with the song title and the magazine advert. I will also bhe using natrual lighting to take the photogrpahy to give the colours a more relatable and natrual feel towards them.

Conventions of genre:
I decided to use both conventional and uncoventional elements to the magazine advert for example mis-en-scene clothing such as relatable clothing, jeans, bagging jumpers, natrual settings, natrual lighting all which are conventional to an indie music genre. Without the convetnions we wouldnt gain our specific niche audience and the audience would probably feel more distant from the artist for trying to subvert the streotypes so the music video could result into a flop, due to the artsist trying to be more diverse. By following the conventions of the indie genre i wish to include elements such as mis-en-scene elements such as relatable clothing, jeans, bagging jumpers, natrual settings, natrual lighting. Typography which includes the artists name being in the centre but with non bold writing due to the natrual colours of the magazine advert it shows that she isn't trying to make a bold statement she isn't trying to be centre of attention, she wants to be known but in a subtle more elegant sort of way. Another way in which would be conventional would be the use of laguage. It will not be rude but it will use hidden metaphors and sibilance to give it that twist compared to your normal magazine artical. It needs something catchy for the audience to remeber it by and this is also conventional to a indie music video as the language on the magazine advert always catches your attention in a way that is different to the rest.
Images used:
The images used within this magazine advert will be a close up of the artist in a certain environment which will be used within the music video preferably camden market to give the background a certain edge against the rest of your normal magazine adverts, and a background that will make the artist stand out from the magazine. This will allow the audience to understand the connection between the artist and the music video. The artist is the main important feature within the music video and therefore would be better and more appropriate for the artist to be on the front and to be known and be recognised on the albums than the other information on it. The close up of the artist is essential within our magazine advert as it draws the attention to the features of the artist giving the audience a more personal feel towards them as they can see them more up close than what they would do normally. This then builds a relationship with the audience as they are able to see up close what the artists facial features look like and how she represents her music genre with mis-en-scene elemetns such as costume and makeup, and how it is subtle and relatable to the day-to-day life of a normal human being.
Layout and Design:
The layout of the magazine advert will possibly have the artists face as a closeup and may include some of her body to fill the page with a guitar, her facial expression concentrating but in a sort of a deep thought which may show the feelings that the artist is going through. The facial expressions are key within this magazine advert so this is why it would be in the centre of the magazine advert in order to make sure that our artist is the centre of attention and the main focus of the article. The writing to introduce the album and the artist themselves, i believe should also be in the centre possibly just under the chin of the artist but above the chest line. This is because i believe that this will make the artist known to her audience and catch the attention of them also. The writing will have to be subtle but bold enough to show the audience who she is and what the title of the song is called. This will create a personal feel to the layout and the design as where everything is centred they can focus on just the artist and feel close to her than they have before.

Typography: The typography used will be easy to read and match the music which in this case is "Burn" therefore the font of the writing may be less elegant and more energetic that can attract the audience as they may think that the artist is trying new ways of subverting the indie music genre. This will represent the song and that the song is quite emotional and upbeat with a meaning behind it that may relate to some of the audience. The different style writing may turn the audience away as they may not be expecting this type of music and font of writing for an indie genre and therefore may not be interested in listening to the song or buying the album if the song subverts the indie genre.

Language: The language used will be plain and simple and not use a lot of detail and long words. The short description of the album by adding reviews by well known companies to make the album look interesting and better for the audience in order to make them buy the album. This will then therefore entice them to buy this as if we use well known reviewers then they may believe that the album is at a higher class. The language will be easier for the audience to understand and therefore will help the audience understand what the artist is about and whether they are someone who likes to use more intellectual and sophisticated language  or somebody who is normal casual person who likes to have normal conversations. This also follows conventions of the genre as most indie artists are not intellectually smart they just sound it. The normal conversations will help the audience understand and know what the artist is like, and that they are a regular person who likes to have normal conversations with people.

To conclude, i found this useful in relation to taking pictures for our advert as well as preparing us to use Photoshop as this it has given me a brief idea of what i would like to see in my music advert and having planned it has made the final product more clearer to see rather than making it up on the sport whilst following the conventions.

·         Do you feel like you are more aware of the pictures you need to take for your advert and how/why?

  1. You have provided a good analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen certain elements to use within your advert.

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you state whether you will include a personal message/acknowledgment from the artist and why
    2) Make sure you explain all elements fully in terms of what they create for the audience and how it will help promote the audience
    3) Be careful of repetition
    4) Include a pic of your advert

  2. You have explained clearly what all of the elements identified create for the audience and how they may impact them; you still need to include a pic of your advert and check spelling etc.
