One element I used was the use of conventional colours. Within an indie genre the conventional colours that are stereotypically used are the use of natural/neutral colours, these could include light blues, yellows, pinks, greens and greys. By researching magazine articles by other indie artists that were relevant to our chosen genre, we were able to see that the main colours used were blues, greens and greys. I decided to follow the stereotypical conventional colours in my magazine article as i wanted the artist to be portrayed as an indie artist, not as somebody who isn't true to their genre. I had specifically used white for the typography as this colour contrasted with the black/dark background. It made the writing stand out for the title of her single - (Burn) - and then for the album title as well. I believe that this colour is conventional to an indie music genre and i used this as it is a subtle colour. This colour can represent the innocence and the purity of the artists personality despite the photograph saying different. I wanted to show the audience that she is pure and subtle artist, and not somebody who would be so conscious of how she is portrayed. The colour shows her purity to the audience and makes them connect better with artist and have a better relationship with them as she is able to show that she is true to her personality and to herself and also her music.
Another colour I have used is the colour yellow. I have used yellow for the artist's name. This colouring was used as the artist's name is 'Lola Starr' - the yellow represents the stereotype of a star being yellow.
There are many different conventions to the indie music genre within my individual magazine advert. I have used a variety of different conventions within it, using different elements such as mis-en-scene clothing, body language, facial expressions, and eye contact; as well as elements with colour cinematography etc. One of the conventions in which I have particularly followed is the use of mis-en-scene clothing. I have followed a very conventional/ stereotypical clothing scheme which when researched was used by many different indie artists. This included the conventional clothing of a baggy denim jacket, tight leather pants, doc martin boots (maroon) and a red bandana. By using this indie genre clothing, it has enabled me to promote the artist as very realistic to her audience as she is able to portray herself in normal day-day clothing. This would create a better relationship with the audience as she is able to show that she is relatable to her audience, and like them in a way, that they can believe she isn’t a superficial artist, that she is true to herself and her music, and this therefore makes her easily relatable to her target audience and connect with them better with a more realistic approach.

This was also in a handwriting font so that I could make it look like the artist had handwritten the magazine advert herself, to give a more personal feel towards it. It would create a better relationship with the audience as they will believe it is a sentiment from the artist herself and not from a magazine company or the record label, so therefore gives it a more personal feel.
I feel that my magazine advert conforms to the indie music genres conventions as it uses different mis-en-scene elements such as body language and clothing, whilst using natural setting and colours and also iconography such as the guitar to show that the artist is an indie artist. I believe that my magazine advert will appeal to my target audience as it shows a strong independent women who has a musical talent due to the guitar iconography used. This will appeal to our audience as it may influence them to take up a musical instrument possibly the guitar just to be like the artist herself and to be more connected and have a personal feel and connection with the artist too. I believe by creating an individual magazine advert it will ensure that my group produces a successful magazine advert as I was able to use many different indie music genre conventions in order to portray my artist effectively and efficiently. We will be able to take ideas from all of our individual magazine adverts so that we can effectively create a advert that will promote our artist in a positive light.

Another convention in which my
magazine advert follows is the use of typography. We have both subverted and
conformed the stereotypes of the indie music genre, as we have used writing that
looks like the artist has handwritten it in some form, and this subverts the
stereotypes of our music genre or any genre as you would typically see the
artists writing on the front page of the magazine advert. This gives a more
personal feel to the magazine advert as the artist is showing that she has
personally given a message to her audience despite it only being the title of
her hit single ‘Burn’. Despite this small gesture, it lets the audience connect
more with the artist as they can see that the magazine article is about the
artist themselves, and it also makes the audience feel as if she has written the
magazine advert herself. I have also included an image that shows a more
rebellious indie artist, which would of subverted the indie music
genre.
The image I have used specifically is the artist in a natural habitat, outside, with a retro brick wall as the background, surrounded by some grass (for the natural setting), her body language strong with use of iconography such as the guitar to make the image more conventional to the indie music genre, whilst also promoting the artist as somebody who is conventional to her genre and to herself. The image shows her with a strong mis-en-scene body language and this shows her personality as being strong and determined. This is a good promotion of the artist as it shows off her personality as being strong and independant and this could possibly create a better relationship with her audience as it shows she wants everybody to be strong minded and independant, and nothing can bring them down so you shouldn't show your inequalities you should show that you are strong and independant. This then promotes her better to the audience as they see her personality shown through her body language and they will desire to be more like her independant strong self. The image also highlights the main features on her body due to the effect of 'contrast' used on Photshop. This let me use high key lighting to highlight the features on her face and the side that was facing the camera the most in order to show the outline of her body. This image shows off her sexuality but in a more subtle way so that she is promoted and portrayed as somebody who wants to get the wrong attention from her image. The image shows off her figure whilst following the conventions of the mis-en-scene elements clothing and the baggy top half, whilst the trousers are usually tight fitting. This creates a better relationship with the audience as she will be able to appeal to a wider audience including males as she shows off her sexuality as a female artist despite not looking provocative. This then therefore makes her look more independent and strong despite trying to look like somebody she isn't.
The layout and the design is fairly simple. The image is centred in the middle of the magazine advert so that the artist is made centre of attention. This promotes the artist in a positive light as why she is centre of attention it shows that she is the main focus and that the audience are able to focus on the artist and nothing really else on the magazine article. The writing and the typography is centred on the right hand side of the magazine article. This is so that it doesn't take away the main importance from the artist but has equal but less significant importance so that it catches the attention of the audience but doesn't too much so that they still focus on the artist. I have made sure I have included quotes from music magazines so that it makes the magazine advert look more professional and also to hopefully let the audience feel a better relationship with artist as they may feel a certain kind of loyalty to her as more and more magazines start to promote her; this then promotes her effectively as it makes her look like a well known artist and entices a wider global audience. Her name is at the top of the magazine article as it again makes her centre of attention; it shows that she is the main focus and that the audience are able to focus on the artist and nothing really else on the magazine article. The language in my magazine article is very brief and simple so that my audience are able to understand something that is mean to be simple but promote the artist in a positive light. This could connote the artists personality as being simple as this is a very conventional trait/characteristic of an indie artist.
I did struggle with using Photoshop as I had trouble with the resizing of my image. When I tried to resize my image to make it smaller, it didn't respond with the computer so the system crashed, this happen many times and after getting some guidance by creating new labels I was fortunately able to resolve this issue and caught up efficiently. Another weakness using photo shop was the labels. I kept creating new labels without realising I could possibly duplicate them to make everything easier for me to do and also save me some time. I was able to do this by clicking the right button on the mouse over the layer and therefore duplicate the layer. I then as able to rename it and save myself some more time.
One of my strengths was using the lassio magnetic tool. This enabled me to fully use the entire image but crop out what I didn't want. I found this a rather handy tool to use as it let me enhance one image whilst a did the background separately. This helped create a successful advert as I was able to edit the main image of the artist separately make her mainly on high key lighting whilst the background remained in low key lighting. This was excellent as it made the artist look centre of attention as the main focus was there.
Another strength of mine was the use of the effects that I could put over the image. I used the artist filter and colour filters to give the image more effect. This worked well as it made the artist look centre of attention and the main focus was there. It created a successful advert as it was focussed on the artist and gave a more indie look due to the filter colours used which were, orange, greys and greens which are all conventional to an indie genre.

You have provided a good analysis of your individual advert, explaining clearly why you have incorporated all of your elements.
ReplyDeleteYou need to:
1) Include a picture of your advert
2) Advert NOT article, Layers NOT labels - check this
